Sports flashback April 20-26
April 22, 1980 — The Escanaba boys dominated a season-opening dual golf meet, taking a 319-384 decision from the Gwinn Modeltowners. Esky’s Douglas fired a 36 for medalist honors at the Escanaba Country Club. Esky’s Jeff Koch and Dean Johnson and Gwinn’s Mason Hecker shot 38.
April 23, 1980 — The Esky girls came up short in a season-opening track and field dual meet, dropping a 69-54 decision at Menominee. Esky’s Jean Tolfa won the 100-yard dash in 12.3 seconds and long jump at 15-7. Michelle Hall captured the 800. Patty Dulek took the 110 hurdles (18.2) and Kathy Berrigan won shot put (33-10).
The Gladstone boys placed third in a quadrangular meet at Marquette with 40 points. Munising edged Marquette 56-52 for top honors and Negaunee had 25. Tracy Ahola provided the Braves with a first in the 400-meter dash (52.2) and Karl Dollhopf took the 300 hurdles (41.94). Gladstone also won the 1600 relay (3:42.4).
April 24, 1980 — Five Escanaba youth wrestlers earned titles in the Greater Fox Valley Open tournament at Brillion, Wis. Marvin Nault earned the 40-48 weight class championship in grades K-2. Mike Chouinard took first in 49-54 and Brian Waller was crowned champion in 55-59. Clint Waller copped the 70-75 division for grades 3-4 and Dennis Nelson took first in 80-85 for grades 5-6.
April 22, 1985 — Bud Moll and Jim Larson of Trout Creek became surprise winners in the 17th Annual Escanaba Jaycees Ford River Canoe Race, taking the 18½-foot cruising class in 1:12:48. Tim Triebold and Ev Crozier of Marinette, ranked among the midwest’s elite canoeists, were runners-up at 1:36 and Joe Johnson and Solomon Carriene of Menominee placed third.
April 24, 1985 — The Esky girls opened their track and field season by posting an 82.5-45.5 triumph over the Menominee Maroons in a dual meet. Freshman Tammy Cook won the 100-yard dash in 12.3 seconds and 220 (28.3) and anchored the winning 880 relay. Tammy Funke added a first in high jump at 5-1. Candy Miron took long jump (15-1) and was runner-up in high jump.
April 25, 1985 — The Rapid River boys prevailed in a quadrangular meet with 103 points. They were followed by Rock Mid Peninsula 75, Carney-Nadeau 42 and Bark River-Harris 26. Rapid River’s Brent Berglund swept the weight events with tosses of 42-1 shot put and 132-7 in discus.
Denise Beauchamp won three events, leading the BR-H girls to victory with 100 points, followed by Rapid River 83, Mid Pen 40 and Carney 14. Beauchamp took the 100-meter dash in 13.68, 300 hurdles (51.4) and long jump (16-2½).
April 26, 1985 — A pair of sophomores came through in the clutch, helping Esky squeeze past Menominee 4-3 in a tennis match. Mark Nunez secured the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Mike Anttila in No. 4 singles and John Mantel tied the score by taking a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 decision from Dave Anttila at No. 1 singles.
Junior Doug Leisenring set the school discus record and R. Troy Carlson won both dashes, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Gladstone boys from dropping an 85-52 track and field decision to Menominee. Leisenring’s toss of 127-5, topped the previous school-best throw of 125-10 by Andy Wiltzius. Carlson captured the 100-yard dash in 11 seconds and 220 at 25.7. Ken Vanderlinden added a first in pole vault (11-6).
