Sports flashback April 13-19

April 15, 1960 — Manistique graduate Warren Wilson was named head basketball coach at Calumet High School. Wilson played on the Emeralds’ 1953 team, which captured the Upper Peninsula Class B title, before earning varsity letters in basketball, football and track three years in a row at Northern Michigan University.

April 18, 1960 — Marvin Pouliot of Escanaba took over first place in the minor singles division, rolling a 605 series in the U.P. men’s bowling tournament and Wally Flath of Esky hit 1,610 pins to move into a tie for fourth in minor all-events.

April 19, 1960 — Three division champions were crowned in the Escanaba table tennis tournament at Club 314. Jim Boyle defeated Jim Bureau 21-19, 21-9 for the boys’ age 12-13 championship in the Juvenile division. Jill Niles prevailed in the girls’ Junior division, taking a 21-19, 22-20 decision from Bonnie Carlson and Bob Davis retained his title, defeating Ronnie Gautier 21-17, 21-4 in the boys’ 14-15 final.

April 14, 1965 — The Escanaba High School athletic department received permission from the school’s Board of Education to add varsity wrestling to its program. It will begin late next fall and parallel the basketball season. The Board of Education also approved hiring a coach at a salary of $200 a year.

April 14, 1970 — Dan Bougie earned the intermediate boys’ pool championship, defeating Joe Muehlhaus in the title match at the Escanaba Civic Center. Jerry Robitaille took consolation honors in a 2-1 victory over Kari Hannula. Hannula then topped Tom Kangas in two games for fourth place.

April 15, 1970 — Ron Henderson then copped the junior boys’ championship, topping Gary Bougie 2-1 in the finals. Tom Valind gained consolation honors and Ron Anderson finished fourth.

April 15, 1980 — Rapid River boys’ varsity basketball coach Fred Stage stepped down after leading the Rockets through a 22-5 season and a Class D state semifinal appearance. Stage, who coached the team for eight seasons, compiled a 133-52 record which included three district titles and two regional championships. The Rockets defeated Ewen-Trout Creek in this year’s regional final and Cedarville in the state quarterfinals before falling to Muskegon Western Michigan Christian in the semifinals. He will continue to serve as the school’s athletic director and cross county coach.
