Sanville sharp, Braves earn sweep over Ironwood

GLADSTONE — Sophomore Cooper Sanville struck out 10 batters as the righty led Gladstone baseball to an 11-1 victory over Ironwood in game. The Braves also overcame a 7-1 deficit to take game two 12-7 at Don Olsen Field here Monday.

“I didn’t go out there expecting to get 10 strikeouts,” Sanville said. “It was windy, cold and rainy. But once I found my groove it felt really good.”

Sanville gave up hits to the first three Ironwood batters, but answered back striking out three of the next four batters giving up one run and leaving the bases loaded.

The Braves quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning and scored three runs on errors and miscues by the Red Devils to give the Braves a 3-1 lead after one.

Sanville picked up right where he left off in the second inning as he struck out the first two batters looking and Ironwood’s Parker Osterman flew out to the right fielder to end the top half of the second inning.

In the third inning, Sanville struck out the first batter looking and Ironwood went three up three down in the top of the third.

“Cooper is as talented as they come,” Braves coach Tyler Swanson said. “He has taken some good steps in the off-season. He has grown up and he is going to have to be a stud for us to be the team that we want to be.”

Sanville gave up a pair of singles to start the fourth inning but rallied after Evan Oja grounded out to first base. Sanville struck out the next two batters to end the top half of the fourth stanza.

In the bottom of the fourth after a lead-off single by Casey Alworden. Sanville hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop and reached on an error bringing Alworden in to score and the Braves extended their lead to 4-1. Isaac Ketchum had an RBI single to put the Braves up 5-1 and Davin Mattonen had a monster two-run double extending the Braves lead to 7-1 and the Braves never looked back.

In the second game the Braves trailed 7-1 but battled back behind three hits in four at bats by Sanville who also had a pair of RBIs in the contest.

Gladstone’s biggest play of the second game came on a sacrifice bunt by Gavin Frossard that scored two runs.

Frossard also picked up the win in game two as he surrendered no runs on two hits in two innings highlighted by a curveball that was basically unhittable.

“I pitched a few shutout innings at the Wisconsin Dells last weekend,” Frossard said. “It’s definitely given me a boost of confidence having the success.”

The Braves face Norway at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Norway
