Manistique track sweeps home invite
MANISTIQUE — It was close, but the Manistique track and field teams found a way to prevail in their Kiwanis Invitational here on a rainy Friday.
The Manistique boys edged Bark River-Harris 122-118 and third-place Munising scored 106 points.
Manistique’s girls had 129 points, followed by Stephenson 122 and BR-H 89.
“We were deep and solid,” Manistique coach Erik Mason said. “We’re starting to find our strengths and the points are adding up. The girls responded real well. They weren’t deterred by the weather.”
The Emeralds won the 800-meter relay and three individual events.
“Our handoffs went well,” Emeralds’ freshman anchor Alexandria Scheffer said. “Winning on our home track is special. I didn’t worry about the weather. I just ran hard.”
Manistique senior Leah Goudreau captured long jump at 14-2.5, edging Engadine junior Bianca Briggs on a tie-breaker, with BR-H sophomore Carli Erickson placing third (14-2).
Junior Gwen Brewster added a first for Manistique in shot put (31-0) and classmate Kyra Johnson took pole vault (8-0), edging BR-H sophomore Mira Johnson on a tie-breaker.
“I was close to a PR (personal record),” Johnson said. “Keeping your pole and hands dry were key. We’re all pretty close. It came down to the number of misses.”
Big Bay de Noc freshman Destiny Bleau became a triple-winner for the second straight time, taking high jump (5-1), 100 (13.1) and 200 (27.22). Eighth-grader Evonna LaCosse added a first in the 3200 (14:05) and junior Caraghan Thill placed second in high jump (4-8).
“Evonna also placed fourth in the 1600,” Big Bay coach Angie LaLande said. “We’re really happy for her. This was a real good day for Destiny and Caraghan is doing a real good job. She gets everybody going.”
Boudreau was runner-up in the 100 (13.31) and Briggs was third (13.42)
Stephenson junior Faith Cappaert won the 800 (2:42.93), 1600 (6:01.08) and anchored the winning 3200 relay.
Carney-Nadeau senior Mariska Laurila took first in discus (98-5.5) and second in shot put (29-11).
Munising freshman Addie Bowerman captured the 300 hurdles (53.75) with BR-H sophomore Emma Zawada runner-up (54.8) and Munising Dayne Behning third (56.39).
Behning copped the 100s (18.33) with Bowerman second (19.17).
Senior Dan Goss provided the Munising boys with firsts in the 800 (2:12.61), 1600 (4:55.1) and 3200 (10:49.74) and helped them win the 3200 relay.
Classmate Trevor Nolan took second in the 800 (2:15.64) and anchored the 3200 relay.
BR-H sophomore Ben Knauf was runner-up in the 1600 (4:57.54) and Engadine senior Dakota Taylor placed second in the 3200 (10:54.08).
“These aren’t the greatest conditions, but everybody had to run in the same conditions,” Goss said. “Axl (Richards) started out (second leg) really well and Trevor did an awesome job. I’m really happy with how our team did. Dakota stayed with me for a long time in the 3200. I usually start my kick with about 450 meters left and Dakota made me kick it in with 700 meters to go.”
Manistique sophomore Sam Moose won shot put (39-0) and grabbed the top three spots in disc, led by junior Jacob Lawrence’s winning throw (100-2).
BR-H sophomore Gionni McDonough copped the 100 hurdles (16.55) and 300s (46.99) with senior teammate Justin Bergquist taking first in the 100 (11.87).
In the field events, Broncos’ sophomore Dane Schmitt took pole vault (10-0) and senior Blake Mason got first in high jump (5-6).

Powers North Central’s highest finish took place in shot put where senior Spencer Willa was second at 36-2.
