Dexter’s Bar claims Gold Medal Classic men’s title

HERMANSVILLE — It became a little challenging at times, but Menominee Dexter’s Bar maintained the upper hand in a 69-47 triumph over Marinette Wagner-Casperson Insurance in the men’s Class A final of the 86th Annual Gold Medal Basketball tournament here Sunday.

Kyle Monroe, the tournament’s Outstanding Player, swished a 20-foot jump shot from the left wing to give Dexter’s a 30-14 cushion in the first half.

The Marinette-based team answered with a 10-2 run, closing within 32-24 and forcing Dexter’s to use a time-out.

“Competition from top to bottom was really good,” Monroe said. “Anybody could have beaten anybody. The big thing is they were in their sixth game. We wanted to make sure we outworked them. There was no quit in them. To battle back after losing their first game says a lot about their guys.”

Wagner-Casperson was within 46-37 midway through the second half before Dexter’s, comprised primarily of former Michigan Tech cagers, began to pull away.

“I think it was just one of those things,” Monroe said. “We were able to crank it up another notch and they were getting a little tired. We make a weekend of it here every year. As soon as we get the schedule, we make final arrangements to come. It’s fun for us to get together and play a little basketball.”

Austin Armga scored 21 points and Monroe added 17 for Dexter’s. Clay Gerdy hit 13 for Wagner-Casperson.
