HERMANSVILLE — The Hermansville Hometown Physical Therapy & Wellness women had things their way here Sunday as they rolled past Hermansville BAE Message 61-26 in the Class A championship game of the 86th Annual Gold Medal Classic Basketball tournament.
Hometown quickly built a 16-2 lead and extended it to 28-4 on a floater by Mckenzie Hoffmeyer.
A layup by Nina Bower on a pass from Lauren Zawada then pushed its advantage to 32-10 moments before halftime.
Hometown, comprised mainly of current and incoming Bay College players, pushed its lead to 39-10 early in the second half of a physical contest.
Menominee graduate Anna Axtell scored 23 points, including a layup and pair of free throws to start the second half, and was selected Outstanding Player in Class A. Zawada added 16.
“I think playing at Bay this year helped a lot,” Axtell said. “I thought this would be a good opportunity for us to keep playing. Couple of the girls will be playing with us next season. This was also a good chance for us to bond. It feels good to win this tournament. This gives us motivation for next year. We should be pretty solid again. We’ll be playing in the Gus Macker tournament at Iron Mountain in August and practicing together this summer.”
Axtell poured in 36 points and Zawada hit 22 in Hometown’s 81-40 conquest of Carney Shelby’s Deli Saturday. Shae Linder led Shelby’s with 11. Brooke Granquist and Tessa Wagner finished with 10 each.
BAE, led by Andie Arsenault’s 13 points, opened with a 40-25 victory over Hermansville Viau, Inc. then added a 55-37 triumph over Wisco 10 Ones.
Arsenault scored 15 points and Bark River-Harris varsity coach Paige Welch tallied 11 in Saturday’s nightcap.
Trenary Toast captured the Class B title in a 62-47 triumph over Viau, Inc.
Brooke LaPlant paced Trenary with 22 points and Outstanding Player Brierra Workman scored 17. Grace Maule hit 13 and Alaina Lodewald tallied 11 for Viau’s Sunday. Viau’s reached the title championship contest by defeating The Shoppe of Carney 67-47.
Maule led the way with 16 points and Gogebic Community College cager Gracie Kleikamp tossed in 13.
In the previous game, Workman’s 10 points was enough to lead Trenary Toast past Shelby’s 38-29. Morgan Baird had 10 for Shelby’s.
The victory enabled Trenary to bounce back from Saturday’s 61-47 loss to Wisco 10 Ones.
Mariah Cloud scored 28 and Lindsey Blackowl had 10 for Wisco. LaPlant hit 12 and Emma Rudden added 10 for Trenary.
Shelby’s opened in a 64-26 rout of The Shoppe.
