Sports Flashback March 23-29
March 25, 1980 — Escanaba UCT salvaged a victory in three hockey games, defeating Pelkie 4-3 in a Copper Country youth tournament. Joe Wise scored twice and Pat McDermott and Perry McConkey added a goal apiece. Mike Karkkainen and Shawn Vicenzi hit a goal each in an 8-2 loss to Houghton in the opener. Esky also dropped its finale 5-2 to Calumet.
March 29, 1980 — Todd Poquette hit 26 points and Steve Perry added 21, leading Wilson Leo’s Mobil to an 89-68 basketball triumph over Kingsford Pete’s Grocery in the 42nd Annual Gold Medal basketball tournament at Hermansville.
Rogette’s of Carney wasn’t as fortunate, dropping a 84-64 decision to Marquette Wanuck Concrete. Kevin Miller led Wanuck’s with 26 points and Paul Kotz had 24. Ivan Laurin paced Rogette’s with 20.
Six members of the Gladstone Youth Club wrestling team, including five from the Flat Rock Elementary School, won gold medals in a tournament at Coleman, Wis. David and Mike Bouchard and Marvin Nault were winners in the kindergarten through grade 2 division. Daryl Miron was crowned champion in grades 3-4 and Alan Marenger was crowned champion in grades 5-6. Michael Troy Bruntjens of Jones Elementary captured a grade 3-4 title.
March 23, 1985 — The Powers North Central Jets came up short in their quest for a second straight Class D state basketball title, dropping a 64-54 decision to Bridgman in a semifinal contest. Gerald Whitens led the Jets with 19 points. Rod Wells tallied 18 and Tim Bilski finished with 10.
West Iron County stayed alive in Class C with an 81-71 victory over Wyoming Godwin Heights. Dan Lewis led the Wykons with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Michael Nelson added 17 points. Brian Lewis hit 14 and Darren Bray chipped in with six.
March 25, 1985 — West Iron then settled for runner-up honors, dropping a 48-36 decision to Detroit St. Martin DePorres in the title game.
Two area basketball teams advanced in the 47th Annual Gold Medal tournament by posting victories. Bark River Ray’s Feed Mill defeated Bark River Northern Michigan Bank 79-71 in a Class C contest Gladstone edged Kingsford Rice Juice 75-72 in a Class D match-up.
Dave Granquist led Ray’s with 20 points and Mark Fochesato added 18. Jim Richer hit 15 for the bankers. Jim and Mark LeGault scored 18 apiece for Gladstone.
March 26, 1985 — Bob Whitens of North Central was selected Class D Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of America. The Jets, who won all 20 of their regular-season games, finished 25-1. Whiten was also named Upper Peninsula Coach of the Year by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and Michigan’s Coach of the Year by the Associated Press and Detroit News.
