Sports flashback Feb. 23-March 1

Feb. 23, 1990 — The Superior Central Cougars clinched the Central U.P. Conference basketball title, defeating the Rock Mid Peninsula Wolverines 79-68. Eric Peterson and Brian Hawley led the Cougars with 21 points each and Darren Seymour had 11. Jason Lippens and Scott Johnson hit 19 points apiece and Phil Croasdell added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines.

Feb. 24, 1990 — Dana Young scored a career-high 19 points to go with 15 rebounds as the Escanaba Eskymos breezed past the Stephenson Eagles 88-38. John Barnes added 17 points and 15 boards and Ken Troyer tallied 10 points.

The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears ended a 16-game losing streak in a 109-86 triumph over the Grand Marais Polar Bears. Brad Ritter hit seven 3-point shots while scoring career-best 27 points. Larry Barbeau grabbed 11 rebounds. Dan Peterson led the Polar Bears with 30 points.

Feb. 26, 1990 — The Gladstone Braves earned their first ABC Conference gymnastics, edging Escanaba 96.7-94.3. Menominee scored 93.1 points and Marquette had 77.2. Esky’s Katie Aho captured top honors in all-around with 33.8 points and won vault (8.7) and Jackie Berube took first on uneven bars (8.85). Gladstone’s Michelle Bolek placed third in all-around (32.5) and teammate Tracy Snowaert took fourth (32.45).

Feb. 27, 1990 — Paul Jensen stopped 30 shots, but it wasn’t enough to keep Esky from dropping a 6-4 hockey decision to Marquette in a Class A regional opener. Tim Martineau, Cory Kositzky and Scott Sliva were among Esky’s goal scorers. Marquette’s Jeremy Beerman scored a hat trick and Ken Kerekes scored the game-winner with 68 seconds remaining.

Dave Lundquist hit 14 points and Gary Kidd had 12, leading the Rapid River Rockets past the Engadine Eagles 62-57. Craig Krause led the Eagles with 22.

Feb. 23, 1995 — Gladstone’s wrestling season ended in a 48-16 loss to the Petoskey Northman in a Class B regional opener. Joe Larson, however, pinned Petoskey’s Pat Eckel with five seconds remaining in the 106-pound match. Tom Richer provided the Braves with a 15-1 victory over Shane Gary at 112. Bryan LeClaire (134) defeated Casey Strodling 8-6 and Steve Viau (142) took a 10-3 decision from Earnie Wynn.

Feb. 24, 1995 — Scott Freel and Mark Mills scored 14 points apiece, leading Gladstone to a 59-46 basketball victory over the Kingsford Flivvers. Mitch Cole added 13.

Renee Carlson served for 12 points, leading Gladstone to a 15-7, 15-7 volleyball triumph over Escanaba. Kristi Darmogray added nine points and Amy Klein had four for the Eskymos.

Feb. 25, 1995 — A steal by Joe Freidhoff with 10 seconds left to play helped Esky secure a 51-50 victory over the Alpena Wildcats. Trevor Koski led the Eskymos with nine points.

Jeff Ives drained a 3-point field goal with 17 seconds remaining as the Bark River-Harris Broncos then hung on for a 54-53 triumph over the Felch North Dickinson Nordics. Jeremy Pach scored 12 points and Larry Kleiman tallied 10 points and eight rebounds for the Broncos. John Richard led the Nordics with 22 points.

Feb. 27, 1995 — The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears won their seventh straight in a 78-43 conquest of Engadine. Eric Ranguette paced the Black Bears with 20 points. Bruce Spaulding tallied 18 points and 20 rebounds. Justin Gauthier hit 10 points. Mike Harvey grabbed 11 boards and Colin Pomeroy collected nine assists.

Jason Carter poured in a career-high 37 points and Mike Rondeau added 25 as Superior Central defeated the Chassell Panthers 82-67. Tim Maki scored 10 for the Cougars. Joe Suomis led the Panthers with 29.

March 1, 1995 — Don St. John’s 16 points and 13 rebounds was enough the lead the Manistique Emeralds past the Newberry Indians 74-53. Mike Kraatz hit 13 and Jim Morgan had 10.
