March 19, 1975 — Area gymnastics teams finished well behind Marquette in the Upper Peninsula Finals. Marquette scored 104.7 points, followed by L’Anse 87.55, Iron Mountain 86.9, West Iron County 51.25, Gladstone 44.75 and Escanaba 34.05. Gladstone’s Madeline Savoie placed third on balance beam. Kathy Bignall took fourth in floor exercise and Cindy Rivers was fifth on trampoline. Esky’s Pat Flynn finished fourth in vault.
March 22, 1975 — Dorothy and John Ozanich took over first place in the Manistique Elks Club Bowling tournament with 1,186 pins. Pat and Jess Gutierrez and Linda and John Klarich are tied for second at 1,169, followed by Beverly and Don Klagstad 1,153 and Janice McKenzie and Jack Braun 1,150. Ted Demars rolled the highest men’s game with 212 and Klarich hit the top women’s game at 208.
March 16, 1980 — Ben Godlewski scored 18 points, leading the Manistique Emeralds to a 61-52 basketball victory over the West Iron County Wykons in a Class C regional final.
Jeff Savoie added 14. Joe Vaughn and Bill Giles scored 10 each.
John McLenithan hit a career-high 33 points, helping the Rapid River Rockets defeat the Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers 75-68 in a Class D regional final. Scott Majestic contributed 19 points and Jay Mitchell and Mike Boyer grabbed 11 rebounds apiece.
March 20, 1980 — Rapid River kept its postseason hopes alive after taking a 63-55 decision from the Cedarville Trojans in a state quarterfinal contest. McLenithan led the way with 23 points. Majestic hit 12 and Mitchell and Boyer finished with 10 each.
Manistique wasn’t so fortunate, falling 88-48 to the state’s top-ranked team in another quarterfinal game, the Reed City Coyotes. Gary Ketcik paced the Emeralds with 13 points.
March 22, 1980 — Rapid River’s season ended in the state semifinals where it dropped a 64-52 decision to Muskegon Western Michigan Christian. McLenithan scored 15 points. Majestic added 14 and Boyer had 12.
