March 16, 1960 — Jim McGovern scored 18 points, leading Cloverland College to a 57-51 basketball victory over Michigan Hotel in the Escanaba City League. He was followed by Frank Katrinski with 12, Cliff O’Connell 11 and Jim Hamelin 10. Joe Friedgen scored 16 for Michigan Hotel.
March 18, 1960 — The tournament trail came to an end for the Escanaba Eskymos as they dropped a 55-47 basketball decision to Ludington in a Class B state quarterfinal contest. Barry Andrews led Esky with 12 points. Six-foot-9 Harry Volker paced the Orioles with 20.
Augie Gafner bowled a season-high 704 series, topping his previous best by seven pins in the Terrace Major League. He hit games of 234, 246 and 224, helping the Pete’s Grocery team score 2,777.
March 21, 1960 — Hermansville Joe’s Tavern advanced in the 22nd Annual Gold Medal basketball tournament opening with a 71-51 triumph over Escanaba Hamms Beer. Bob Whitens led Joe’s with 22 points and John Farley tallied 21.
March 16, 1965 — Perkins squeezed past Al’s Bar in a men’s independent basketball match-up. Melvin LaCosse led the winners with 32 points and Buzz Sovey added 24. Wally Slade scored 20 for Al’s.
March 22, 1965 — Poly Viau scored 26 points, leading Eben to a 49-46 basketball triumph over Garden Jack’s Bar in the 27th Annual Gold Medal tournament at Hermansville. Wally Morin led Jack’s with 14.
Bob Fabry and Joe Arnold combined for 43 points as Hermansville Wildwood Restaurant defeated Daggett 60-54. Roger Ives scored 24 for Daggett.
The Escanaba Merchants scored four in double digits, but it wasn’t enough to keep them from dropping a 69-67 overtime decision to Champion. Bob Nystrom paced the Merchants with 18 points. Jim Almonroeder added 15. Punch Johnson had 12 and John Berrigan tallied 11. Jim Mitchell hit 24 and Pete Koski scored 19 for Champion.
March 16, 1970 — The Holy Name Crusaders captured the Class B regional basketball title in a 58-43 conquest of Menominee. Steve Kleiman led the Crusaders with 22 points. Bill Skradski scored 14 and Gary Kleiman had 11.
Holy Name wasn’t as fortunate in the state quarterfinals where it dropped a 77-70 decision to Bay City All Saints. Skradski scored 23 points. Joe Harvey added 18 and Steve Kleiman finished with 16.
Big Bay de Noc’s tournament run ended in the Class D quarterfinals where it dropped a 75-62 decision to the Wakefield Cardinals. Bill Hartman paced the Black Bears with 23 points. John Lewandowski netted 15 and Herb Pomeroy had 10. Mike Schweig led the Cards with 27 points and Kim Tomczyk scored 19.
