Sports flashback Feb. 2-8

Feb. 2, 2000 — The Escanaba Eskymos scored four players in double digits in a 71-43 basketball victory over the Kingsford Flivvers. Jeremy Nastoff scored 14 points. Bob Skerbeck and Eric Hilberg hit 11 each and Spike Houle finished with 10.

Nick McGuire’s 21 points was enough to lead the Manistique Emeralds past the Gwinn Modeltowners 74-50. Dave Winkel tallied 13 and Greg Nelson added 10.

Lance Veeser poured in a career-high 28 points as the Bark River-Harris Broncos rolled past the Stephenson Eagles 69-48. Bill Blahnik and Greg Olson scored 12 apiece.

Feb. 4, 2000 — Michelle Dennis served for four consecutive points as the Rapid River Rockets earned a 15-8, 16-14 volleyball triumph over BR-H. A service point by Molly Bacon set the stage for the match-winning run

BR-H’s Valerie Grzyb hit six service points, including an ace, to go with 12 assists. Jodi Smith added five points, including an ace, four kills, 10 assists and 10 digs. Samantha Corrigan recorded six kills and six digs and Leah Folcik had four kills and 13 digs.

Feb. 7, 2000 — Matt Pearson scored a hat trick and Cory Smith provided a playmaker as Esky snapped a five-game losing streak in a 4-2 hockey victory over the Traverse City Trojans. Ryan Beggs got Esky’s first goal and Scott Dagenais had 17 saves.

The Gladstone wrestlers captured the Gwinn Invitational title with 209 points, followed by Munising 150 and Norway 129. The Braves’ individual champions were Eric Miron at 103 pounds, Jonas Olson (125), Tony Bartol (145) and Tim Vallier (160). Runners-up included Greg Elliott (112), Jamie Viau (152), Jesse DeBacker (189) and Brad Sutter at heavyweight.

A Gladstone graduate helped the Michigan Tech men win the Wisconsin Governor’s Cup ski meet at Blackjack Mountain north of Ramsay. Chris Dehlin won the giant slalom race in 69.91 seconds and placed fourth in slalom at 68.35.

Feb. 2, 2005 — The Escanaba wrestlers defeated longtime nemesis Coleman, Wis. 45-30 in a dual meet. Jim Berube clinched the victory by taking a 9-2 decision from Dustin Sotka at 145 points for Esky’s first triumph over the Cougars in approximately 15 years. Shaun Olson (152) then took an 8-4 decision from Doug Nowak. The Eskymos trailed 18-0 before heavyweight Jeremy Waller pinned Jonah Meyer in 58 seconds.

Justin Bloniarz hit 25 points, leading the Bark RIver-Harris Broncos to a 72-67 basketball triumph over the Rock Mid Peninsula Wolverines. Rich Roman led Mid Pen with a career-high 26 points and Caleb Hayes scored 19.

Feb. 3, 2005 — The Manistique girls’ and boys’ swim teams earned runner-up honors in the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet. The Ishpeming Westwood girls edged the Emeralds 115-113 and the Gwinn boys were crowned champions at 124 and Manistique scored 112.

Manistique’s Katie Weber won 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.81 and 200 individual medley at 2:43.73) and helped the winning 200 medley and freestyle relays. Molly Weber added a first in 200 freestyle (2:28.04) and Marian Mooi won diving with 107.5 points. Roberto Rodriguez provided the Manistique boys with their lone first in 100 breaststroke (1:13.83)

Feb. 4, 2005 — Jenna Guay collected 13 kills and 12 digs, leading Esky to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-16) volleyball triumph over Gladstone. Christa Erickson added 21 assists and 15 digs. Sara Roberts hit three service aces to go with eight kills. Sara Pearson tallied two aces and seven kills and Laura McMillan had six kills.

Ashley Nyenhuis led the Braves with 8 kills and 11 digs. Samantha Baird served for six aces and recorded four kills. Sam Chouinard finished with eight assists and eight digs and Bobbie Jo Taylor had eight assists and seven digs.

Feb. 5, 2005 — A strong defensive effort helped Esky snap a seven-game losing streak in a 50-46 upset basketball victory over the Kingsford Flivvers. Patrick O’Connell led the Eskymos with 18 points and Justin Wiles scored a career-best 10.
