Sports flashback Feb. 16-22
Feb. 16. 1985 — Scott Peterson poured in 34 points, running his season total to 437, while helping the Escanaba Eskymos post a 76-57 basketball triumph over the Alpena Wildcats. Todd Zeise added 12 points in the non-conference contest.
Joe Madden scored 24 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Gladstone Braves from dropping a 72-67 decision to the West Iron County Wykons. Doug Ingalls hit 19 points to go with 12 assists and Chuck Helman sank 7-of-9 shots and finished with 18 points.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos overcame 32 turnovers in an 82-78 victory over the Trenary Comets. Rick Ray paced the Broncos with 29 points. Rob Nichols collected 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Feb. 18, 1985 — Orion LaPalm of Escanaba captured the Golden Gloves regional boxing championship, stopping Conrad Rios of St. Johns in the second round of a 178-pound open division bout. His brother Allen LaPalm wasn’t as fortunate, losing to Steve Blank of Munising in the 178 novice finals.
Turnovers foiled the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears in a 62-54 basketball loss to the Engadine Eagles. Steve Harbenski scored 21 points for the Black Bears, who finished with 32 miscues. Craig Potvin added 14 points.
Feb. 19, 1985 — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves clinched the Central U.P. Conference title in a 73-64 conquest of BR-H. Matt Johnson led the Wolves with 21 points and Todd Salo added 19 points and 15 rebounds. Ray, Nichols and Ron Kleiman scored 12 points apiece and Emerald Mercier grabbed 14 rebounds.
Feb. 20, 1985 — Dave Archer set a school career scoring record while leading Manistique past Big Bay 57-42. Archer scored 29 points while running his career total to 1,198 points, three better than former recordholder Bill Pistulka. Paul Nedeau scored 13 and Frank Buskey added 10 for the Black Bears.
Feb. 22, 1985 — The Powers North Central Jets ran their school-record winning streak to 27 games in an 83-58 conquest of Crystal Falls Forest Park. Rod Wells scored 28 points for the Jets. Tim Bilski tallied 15. Tim Stein scored 13 and John Charles chipped in with 10.
Feb. 17, 1990 — Nick Bink scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Escanaba Eskymos earn a 66-60 basketball triumph over the Gladstone Braves. John Barnes led Esky in scoring with 25. Bink finished with a season-high 18. Dave Elliott and Rick Pepin hit 13 each and Dave Bratonia had a career-best 11.
Feb. 19, 1990 — Kevin Holmes of Marquette won the Sixth Annual Slip-Sliding-Away five-mile run in 27:39, nine seconds ahead of Mark Horwitz of Norway. Chuck Simons of Marquette placed third (29:55) and Kim Lauscher of Esky took the women’s title (41:19.
Feb. 20, 1990 — Tracy Snowaert won three events, leading the Gladstone gymnasts in a 91-74.35 victory over Marquette. She led the all-around standings with 30.55 points and copped uneven bars (8.45), floor exercise (8.3) and vault (7.4) and placed third on balance beam. Teammate Margie Plouff won beam (7.5) and shared second on vault with Michelle Bolek.
Feb. 21, 1990 — Phil Croasdell poured in 27 points as the Rock Mid Peninsula Wolverines clipped the Engadine Eagles 81-54. John Gudwer added 18 and Cliff Barron tallied 11.
Escanaba improved to 31-3 this season in a 3-0 (15-1, 15-11, 15-3) volleyball conquest of Iron Mountain. Lisa Kuckhahn served for seven points. Jessica Bastien and Jane Maki added six points apiece and Jenny Howard recorded five kills.
