HANNAHVILLE — A Northern Lights League boys’ basketball game was close in the first quarter, then Hannahville suddenly took off in an 82-34 rout of Mackinac Island here Saturday morning.

In the girls’ game, junior Laniceya Malinowski sank a 10-foot jump shot with less than three minutes left to play as the Soaring Eagles then hung on for a 38-37 victory.

The Mackinac Island boys took a 16-13 lead on a trio of free throws by Vincent Davis with 2½ minutes left in the opening frame.

Hannahville then erupted for 32 unanswered points, racing to a 45-16 advantage on a layup by sophomore M.J. Smith on a pass from junior Sam Beaver late in the second stanza.

The Soaring Eagles led 51-18 at halftime and extended their cushion to 71-26 on a buzzer-beating eight-foot jump shot by freshman Antonio Eagle in the third frame.

“We changed things up and played a different type of defense,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “Mackinac Island made a couple 3-point shots and it took a little while for us to settle in and play our game. Once we were able to get out and run, everything kind of snowballed. We started rebounding better in the econd quarter and we were able to get some offensive boards. We’ve really been working on getting the ball up the court.”

Sam Beaver scored 14 points. Seniors Jayden Sagataw, who joined the 1,000-point club in Friday’s 87-35 victory, and Kche Shawano tallied 11 each. Classmate Jesse Wabanimkee added 10.

“Right now it’s about fine tuning some things, working on execution and getting ready for the post-season,” Bintner said. “It’s important we don’t falter down the stretch. Being the No. 1 seed gives you an advantage in the conference tournament. I wish other teams had a conference tournament. It’s an exciting environment and it gets you ready for districts.”

Hannahville, which improved to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the league, hosts Wetmore Munising Baptist Tuesday. Mackinac Island (8-8 overall and 5-7 league) hosts the Bobcats Thursday.

Davis hit 17 points for the Lakers, who committed 18 turnovers. The Soaring Eagles had 10.

Malinowski’s game-winner gave the Hannahville girls a two-point lead before the Lakers concluded the scoring on a free throw by Lakelyn Bunker with 2:28 remaining.

The Soaring Eagles improved to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the NLL and the Lakers, who played without two starters, dropped to 14-4 overall and 9-3 in the league.

“This was a good win for us after having a mental meltdown the night before (in Friday’s 44-37 loss),” Hannahville coach Seth Miller said. “Having two starters out didn’t help them, but Lakelyn Bunker and Madison Gamble are still a handful. Our girls came out and played hard. We told the girls it was up to them and they answered the bell. Improvement is all you hope for.”

At halftime, the game was tied at 18 before Mackinac took a 22-18 lead.

Hannahville responded with a 9-0 run for a 27-24 lead late in the third quarter.

The Lakers, however, led 30-27 entering the final eight minutes.

Malinowski tied the score at 30 on a 20-foot set shot from the right wing early in the fourth.

The teams were tied at 32 midway through the fourth when senior Shayanna Halfaday gave the Soaring Eagles a 34-32 lead on a 10-foot jumper.

Hannahville regained the lead at 36-34 on junior Brittany Thunder’s five-foot set shot on a pass from Malinowski.

Bunker then sank an eight-foot jump shot to tie the score at 36, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish.

“We didn’t come ready to play and I’ve got to figure out how to fix the problem,” Lakers’ coach Mary Patay said. “We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game. We got to sleep in a motel room rather than on the gym floor, but stayed up too late.”

Malinowski paced the Soaring Eagles with 16 points and Halfaday finished with 13. Gamble scored 18 and Bunker had 13 for the Lakers, who had 18 turnovers. Hannahville committed 23.

The Hannahville girls host Paradise Wednesday. The Lakers are idle until they return to Hannahville for the league tournament Feb. 14-15.
