HARRIS — It was a special night for senior Madalynn Corrigan and the Powers North Central Jets as they achieved major milestones in the Division 4 district wrestling tournament here Thursday.
Corrigan recorded her 100th career victory while helping the Jets earn their first district title in a 36-30 triumph over the Norway Knights.
The victory sends the Jets to the regional tourney at Charlevoix where they’ll face Munising in their opener Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Rayders host Rudyard in their opener with the title match set for 6:30.
In the opener, North Central rallied from a 24-point deficit to eliminate Bark River-Harris 36-30.
“This is pretty exciting,” Corrigan said. “This wasn’t a goal I had in mind, but it means a lot. We’re only in our second year. None of us thought this would be possible so soon. I was depending on my teammates to make weight and win the first match so I could get my 100th.”
Corrigan reached the century mark by pinning Norway’s Matt Doney 1:26 in the 113-pound bout which helped the Jets gain a 24-18 lead.
The championship match, which went back and forth, was tied at 24 after Norway’s Kellan Amundson pinned Tre Gomez 69 seconds into the 120 match.
Norway then regained the lead 1:41 into the 126 bout in which Cameron Nevil pinned Nick Dani to make it 30-24.
The Jets secured the title by taking forfeits at 132 and 144 pounds.
Earlier, Carson Schwalbach (157) gave BR-H a 3-0 lead by taking an 8-6 decision from North Central’s Adam Janczewski.
Following a forfeit, sophomore Mitch Corrigan took a 13-9 decision from Myles Nehring as the Broncos stretched their lead to 18-0.
“One of our kids had to stop wrestling because of family issues,” Mitch said. “I got bumped up a weight class and had to make sure to keep my hips back. I’m glad to still have the individual district. I have some high hopes this weekend. I’m real happy for Maddy getting her 100th win. She really wanted it and looked pretty happy after that match.”
Maizy Olson got the Jets on the board by pinning Emma Riley 2:25 into the 106 match
After a forfeit, Maddy Corrigan needed just 44 seconds to pin Josh Webber, enabling the Jets to come within 24-18 after the 120 bout.
The team score was tied at 24 after Dani (126) pinned Maverick O’Driscoll at 2:37.
Sophomore Cooper Raab (132) then pinned Shane LeFiles in 42 seconds, sending the Jets ahead 30-24.
A forfeit enabled the Broncos to tie the score at 30, setting the stage for the 144 bound in which Pryar LaBonte secured the decision by pinning Matt Graham.
Norway took a 36-35 decision from Iron Mountain in its opener which featured just one contested match.
In that match, Iron Mountain’s Gio Saldana (215) defeated Fisher Campbell by technical fall (19-4).
Area boys’ teams visit Manistique for Saturday’s individual district and the girls travel to Gaylord for Sunday’s individual regional.
