ESCANABA — Bay College basketball teams had their way here Wednesday night as they swept a men’s and women’s doubleheader against Alpena Community College with the women winning 108-19 and the men taking a 114-62 decision on Faculty Appreciation Night.

The women’s game was blown open early as they were led by Anna Axtell with 39 points. Axtell hit five 3-pointers on 11 attempts.

“It was nice to see the faculty come out on this special night and being able to get a good team win really lifts up the team,” Axtell said.

The Norse forced 39 Alpena turnovers and turned them into 46 points.

Kennedy Sproule also had a good game, finishing with 19 points and nine rebounds and Mckenzie Hoffmeyer had 15 points and seven steals.

“We came out with a lot of energy tonight,” Bay women’s coach James Fassett said. “Alpena is a little down right now but regardless of our opponent we like to come out strong and put on a good show for our fans.”

In the men’s game, Alpena scored the first points of the game on a mid-range jumper by Derian Williams.

Bay responded as Josh Willams drove to the basket for a layup to tie the game. Moments later, Parker Fahning knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Norse a 8-2 lead. Ryan Sweeney added a layup with 17:11 to go in the first half to extend the Norse lead to 10.

“We jumped on them right away tonight,” Bay men’s coach Matt Johnson said. “We came out with good energy on both sides of the floor which was nice to see, and I thought it was a good overall team effort.”

With 10:57 to go in the half, Nic Williams came up with a steal and took the ball right to the basket for a layup and the Norse led 28-14.

With 4:07 to go in the half, Joe Ofori took the pass and went to the basket for a dunk that extended the Norse lead to 48-24.

“That is kind off routine for me,” Ofori said. “We do a good job setting each other up and the crowd feeds off that energy.”

The Norse had five players in double figures led by KaiRee Gadson with 19 points. Nic Williams had 17, Ryan Sweeney added 16, Josh Williams tallied 14 to go with eight rebounds and six assists. Tre Sanigar had 13.

The Norse will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Muskegon Community College.
