Hannahville boys fall in OT of NLL Tournament title game

HANNAHVILLE — What more could they have done?

Despite hitting 19-of-21 free throws and finishing with just eight turnovers, the Hannahville boys dropped a 104-94 overtime decision to Kinross Maplewood Baptist in the championship game of the Northern Lights League basketball tournament here Saturday.

“We’ve done a pretty good job taking care of the ball,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “Credit to Maplewood Baptist. They didn’t really like playing our style, but found a way to put up 104 points. We knew it was going to be a game of runs. Playing two games in one day seems to hurt us more than other teams. Our kids work so hard. It takes a special athlete to play uptempo that long. The kids should be proud of the way they handled themselves with the ups and downs and coming back from 12 points down to force the overtime. It’s hard to beat a good team three times in a row.”

The Soaring Eagles swept two games from the Black Bears in late January.

It was different this time, however, as the Black Bears took charge in the overtime.

A layup by Hannahville senior Jesse Wabanimkee tied the score at 87 with 28 seconds left in regulation.

Classmate Dashawn Metzger then knotted the contest at 89 early in the overtime.

Maplewood responded with seven unanswered points, surging to a 96-89 lead on a steal and layup by senior Ian Browne with 1:52 remaining in the overtime.

Metzger split a pair of free throws before the Black Bears extended their lead to 100-90 on a gifter by Browne.

Freshman Antonio Eagle scored on a reverse layup to bring Hannahville within 101-94, but it was too little, too late.

The Black Bears took a 64-52 lead on a layup by Browne midway through the third quarter.

Hannahville answered with a 17-7 run, closing within 71-69 on a pair of free throws by senior Jayden Sagataw with 4.3 seconds remaining in the third. It was nip-n-tuck throughout the fourth with the Soaring Eagles taking an 85-84 lead on a layup by Metzger with 1:53 left.

Maplewood regained the lead on a 12-foot jumper by sophomore Joey Hudacek and took an 87-85 on a gifter by senior Haydn Rader.

Hannahville evened the score on a layup by senior Jesse Wabanimkee with 24 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime.

“We’ve come a long way in rebounding, only they got so many opportunities with their length,” Bintner said. “For the most part we played good in the post against Caden (Chromy). We needed a third guy to score in the 20s. It was a great game in a great environment. I think we can walk around with our heads high.”

Metzger led the Soaring Eagles with 35 points. Sagataw, who drained five 3-point shots, added 26. Wabanimkee hit 12 and Sam Beaver had 10.

Senior Carver Day poured in 31 points. Browne scored 29. Chromy tallied 22 and Hudacek had 11 for Maplewood, which committed 17 turnovers.

Hannahville reached the title contest with an 81-55 triumph over Big Bay de Noc in the semifinals.

The Soaring Eagles raced to an early 16-0 lead, ending that run on a putback by Shawano.

Sophomore guard Parker Pederson got Big Bay on the board with a 20-foot jumper from the right wing.

Hannahville led 33-13 after the first quarter and 47-23 at halftime.

Metzger sank five triples and scored 27 points. Beaver added four trifectas and 14 points. Sagataw also scored 14 and Wabanimkee had 12.

Pederson drained seven 3-pointers, leading the Black Bears with 33 points.

Hannahville finished with 12 turnovers and Big Bay had 25.

Big Bay senior Nick DesJarden scored 42 points to go with 21 rebounds and three blocked shots in a 57-53 triumph over Mackinac Island.

“It was a good game,” Big Bay coach Gunner Mickelson said. “I wish we would have closed it out better, although we played a good third quarter. This is the only day of the year which we play two games.”

DesJarden added 22 points, three blocks and two steals in Friday’s 65-59 victory over Wetmore Munising Baptist, then was limited to four points in Saturday’s loss to Hannahville.

Peterson scored 21 against Munising Baptist.
