GLADSTONE — A solid team effort led Gladstone boys basketball to a 73-31 win over Manistique here Monday.

The Braves got to work quickly as they jumped out to an 8-0 run. Freshman Alex Prins scored the game’s opening points on a strong driving layup. Sophomore Gabe Sadler followed it up with a layup of his own and the Braves led 4-0.

Lonnie Davey and Owen Gereau each added a layup to extend the Braves lead to 8-0.

The Emeralds stopped the run on a lay by senior Blake Mason and Jayce Goudreau followed it up with a 3-pointer from the wing to cut the deficit to 8-5.

Teagan Reynolds drove hard to the basket for the shot and drew the foul, but did not convert the free throw and the Braves led 10-5.

Manistique junior Alex Bonneau hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 10-8 and that is as close as it would get as the Braves answered with a 9-0 run highlighted by junior Carter Farnes that put the Braves up 19-8.

“Carter has been doing a great job in practice,” Braves coach Jake Kiesby said. “It was just a matter of time until it started happening in games.”

The Braves outscored the Emeralds 21-20 in the second quarter. Davey scored 10 of his 22 points in the second quarter.

“We are clicking and playing well as a team,” Davey said. “Everyone is getting involved and that spaces the floor and creates open shots.”

The Braves came out of the halftime break outscoring the Emeralds 26-7 in the third quarter. Gereau had a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter.

We are learning and building on what we have done this season,” Kiesby said. “Seeing all these teams for the second time is really helping our kids grow and we are excited about the future.

The Braves will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Kingsford.
