Girls basketball roundup: No. 2 Braves best IM, Esky falls at Sault
ESCANABA –Road trips in February can be hit or miss. For Gladstone and Escanaba girls basketball, Thursday’s road games saw some good and some bad. Here’s what went down.
No. 2 Gladstone 49, Iron Mountain 27
The Mountaineers (6-15) stayed within striking distance as the Braves (19-1) led 18-16 at intermission.
Junior Lillie Johnson then proceeded to net 12 of her game-best 20 point in the second half. Junior Addy Blowers drained a trio of 3-pointers in the game’s final 16 minutes as the Braves outscored IM 31-11 in the second half for the win.
Blowers finished with 12 points off four 3-pointers. Senior Mayce Hanson added eight points and senior Alexa Wetthuhn produced six points.
The Braves host Gwinn at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday before round two with No. 1 Negaunee on Thursday.
Sault Ste. Marie 53, Escanaba 46
Thursday’s game between the Eskymos (9-11) and Blue Devils (14-5) went back and forward like toddlers on a see-saw.
Esky led 16-14 after the first quarter. Sault led 29-25 at halftime. Esky led 38-37 after three quarters before Sault pulled away by outscoring the Eskymos 16-8 in the fourth quarter.
Junior Landry Bray led the orange and black with 14 points with five rebounds and a block. Senior Grayson LaMarche contributed 12 points, five boards, four assists, two blocks and a steal.
Senior Katey Lamb produced eight assists, six points and three rebounds.
The Eskymos stay on the road to face Marquette at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
