Bay women lock down Lakers
ESCANABA — The scorebook shows Bay College’s Makenna Hendrickson scored three points in a women’s basketball game here Tuesday night.
One of those, however, came on a free throw in the final 13 seconds, enough to put the finishing touches on a 71-64 victory over No. 11 Mid Michigan College.
The freshman guard from Baraga also collected eight rebounds, five assists and three steals while in this Michigan Community College Athletic Association North Conference match-up.
“Makenna is a huge impact for us,” freshman guard Lauren Zawada said. “She can handle the ball and rebound.”
The victory enabled the Norse to gain a share of the conference title with the Lakers at 12-2.
Bay, which finished the regular season at 19-9 overall, hosts Delta College (10-16) Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in a Region 12 quarterfinal.
The Norse were clinging to a 62-57 lead following a lay-in by Lakers’ sophomore guard Rachel Resio with 3:37 left to play.
A pass by Zawada then set up sophomore guard Kennedy Sproule with a layup for a 64-57 lead with 2:56 remaining.
Twenty seconds later, Sproule hit an additional layup on a pass from Hendrickson for a nine-point cushion.
Freshman guard Alexus Dunn drained a 21-foot jump shot to bring Mid Michigan within 66-62.
Sproule then sank a 17-foot jumper to give the Norse a six-point cushion and freshman guard Mckenzie Hoffmeyer hit a pair of free throws for an insurmountable 70-62 advantage with 24 seconds left.
“This is a great feeling,” Zawada said. “We knew it was going to be a fight to the end. Winning a game like this is so much better than a blowout. This is much more satisfying. It’s exciting to have a tournament game here. This is better than traveling downstate. I’m nervous, but excited. I have confidence in our team.”
The Norse took a 60-47 lead on a field goal by Sproule midway through the fourth quarter.
Mid Michigan didn’t just go away, however, as it closed within 60-53 on a layup by freshman forward Makayla Watkins.
Zawada made it 62-53 on a jumper from the boulevard before the Lakers got within five points.
Her 15-foot jumper gave Bay a 50-37 cushion with 21 seconds left in the third frame.
Bay surged to a 58-43 advantage on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Anna Axtell early in the fourth.
Three seconds prior to halftime, Axtell hit a layup for a 29-19 lead.
Axtell then opened the third stanza with a jumper from the left corner and Sproule added a pair of gifters for a 34-19 cushion.
Two free throws by Axtell gave the Norse a 40-25 advantage with 5:37 remaining in the third.
The Lakers, however, answered with a 10-0 run with sophomore guard-forward Chloe Watson sinking a pair of gifters at the four-minute mark to bring them within 40-35.
Zawada’s 12-foot jumper from the right baseline and two free throws from Sproule then pushed Bay’s lead to 44-35 at 2:13.
Sophomore guard Addysen Gray’s set shot from the lane shaved Mid Michigan’s deficit to 44-37 at 1:58.
Hendrickson, however, converted a layup on a pass from Zawada to make it 46-37.
Zawada then stole an inbound pass and scored on a lay-in for an 11-point cushion prior to her jumper to conclude the third quarter.
“Lauren got into foul trouble but played well when she was on the floor and Anna really stepped up,” Bay coach James Fassett said. “We definitely wanted to take away their 3s. They were shooting 22 percent from the floor in the first half. This is a huge momentum builder going into tournaments. I think we’re ready for the post-season. Our defense created a lot of turnovers on both ends.”
The teams combined for 47 miscues with most a by-product of solid defense. The Lakers committed 25 and the Norse had 22.
Both teams finished with 36 rebounds. The Norse hit 25-of-61 field goals and the Lakers were 25-of-65 from the floor.
Axtell led Bay with 23 points, eight boards, three steals and two assists. She hit 8-of-10 free throws and Spoule hit all six of hers.
Sproule also scored 16 points, blocked three shots and had four assists. Zawada finished with 12 points, seven steals and three assists. Hoffmeyer chipped in with 10 points and six boards.
“Both teams have good defense and guards,” Fassett said. “It was a good game all-around.”
Watson led Mid Michigan with 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Ebels scored 12 points and Resio had 10.
“Chloe Watson was scoring, but Kadie (Kaukola) was playing good defense,” Zawada said. “I think Kadie covered her pretty well.”
