Sports flashback Jan. 5-11
Jan. 5, 2000 — Eric Hilberg scored 20 points, leading the Escanaba Eskymos to a 70-66 basketball triumph over the Gladstone Braves. Andy Harvey added a career-high 14 points. Jeremy Nastoff also had 14 points. Russ Sargent led the Braves with 17 and Kevin Robitaille had 15.
Brendan Plowe’s last-second shot bounced off the back of the rim, enabling the Rapid River Rockets to escape with a 57-56 victory at Crystal Falls Forest Park. Eric Wilbee paced the Rockets with 18 points. Dan Larrabee tallied 14 and Adam Rushford finished with a season-high 12.
The Carney-Nadeau Wolves sank 14 three-point shots in a 90-69 conquest of Powers North Central. Nick Mellen, who drained six 3-pointers, and Seann Duffin hit 25 points each for the Wolves. Nick Forgette added four trifectas and 21 points. Dave Whitens, who had five triples, and Caroll Whitens, paced the Jets with 15 points apiece and Curtis Graham had 14.
Jan. 7, 2000 — Allyson Conaway collected 10 kills and Jaime Giguere added eight as Esky posted a 15-8, 15-6 volleyball victory over the Menominee Maroons. Nikki Casey had 24 assists and Ashley Rogers finished with 21.
Jodi Smith served for six points and two aces to go with 10 kills as the Bark River-Harris Broncos topped North Central 15-9, 15-3. Candace Ives added six points and 11 assists. Natalie Nelson tallied six points and five kills. Jill Veeser collected five points and an ace and Valerie Gryzb recorded 19 assists. Sara Chartier led the Jets with four points and 15 assists and Tammy Kleikamp had five kills.
Jan. 8, 2000 — Brock Bower tossed in 21 points and Lance Veeser added 16 as the BR-H posted a 76-61 basketball victory over Rock Mid Peninsula. Steve Koski led the Wolverines with 12 and Jake Gobert scored 11.
Jan. 10, 2000 — Matt Hampton stopped 31 shots, helping Esky skate to a 4-3 hockey triumph over the Calumet Copper Kings. Mike Seppanen scored the game-winner. Jeremy Murray, Jacob Moberg and Jason Nelson also scored for the Eskymos.
Jan. 11, 2000 — Nutz-n-Honeys teammates Mike Bintner of Escanaba and John Breitenbach of Bark River rolled 300 games in the Friday Niters Couples League at Bowl-a-rama Lanes. Bintner hit 21 strikes in a row starting for the 10th frame in the first game. He bowled 182-300-256 games for a 738 series. Breitenbach threw strikes in the last three frames of the second game before finishing with his gem. His finale was preceded by 204 and 201 games in a 705 series.
Jan. 5, 2005 — Kyle Kelley scored 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Gladstone Braves from dropping a 44-41 basketball decision to the Munising Mustangs. Jeremy Gilbert added 10 for the Braves and Bo Bruce had 14 for the Mustangs.
The Manistique Emeralds committed 28 turnovers in a 70-66 loss to the St. Ignace Saints. Andy Herro scored 22 points and grabbed 20 rebounds and Steve Nagy added 21 points for the Emeralds. Dan Olsen paced St. Ignace with 18.
Jan. 10, 2005 — Adam Sutter and Joe Mileski earned individual titles, helping Gladstone earn runner-up honors in the 32nd Annual Escanaba Elks Invitational Wrestling tournament.
Ishpeming Westwood was crowned champion with 173.5 points, followed by Gladstone 155.5, downstate Jenison 140, Peshtigo, Wis. 133 and Esky 120.
Sutter pinned Ishpeming’s Scott Saatio in 68 seconds in the heavyweight championship match and Mileski pinned Jenison’s Miguel Garza 3:20 into the 103-pound final. Gladstone’s Caleb Anderson was runner-up at 130 pounds and Bill Larsen (125) and Joel Vallier (189) placed third. Esky’s Derek Saari (103) and Jim Berube (140) also took third.
Ogeema Anziano hit 29 points and Paul Hendra got 20 as the Hannahville Soaring Eagles posted a 66-51 basketball triumph over the Grand Marais Polar Bears. Matt Beaupied and Hunter Capagrossa scored 17 apiece for the Polar Bears.
