Sports flashback 1/19-1/25

Jan. 19, 1980 — The Manistique Emeralds improved to 9-0 this season, posting a 76-60 basketball triumph over the Norway Knights. Bill Giles led the way with 26 points. Tom Smith added 13 and Ben Godlewski had 10.

Karl Dollhopf sank an eight-foot shot with two seconds remaining, lifting the Gladstone Braves to a 54-52 victory over the Ishpeming Westwood Patriots. Steve Johnson led the Braves with 16 points. Dollhopf finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Bob Ballard also had 12 points.

Jan. 21, 1980 — The Escanaba wrestlers placed fourth among six teams in the Merrill, Wis. Invitational. Larry Elie remained undefeated at 126 points. Dave and Dan McNamee earned runner-up honors at 105 and 112, respectively. Todd LaCosse placed third at 132 as did Jim Helgemo at heavyweight.

Jan. 23, 1980 — Scott Majestic’s 25 points were enough to lead the Rapid River Rockets past the Crystal Falls Forest Park Trojans 65-53. John McLenithan added 21 points and 17 rebounds and Ken Sundling chipped in with 15 points and 14 boards.

Jan. 19, 1985 — Joe Madden scored a season-high 26 points, leading the Gladstone Braves to a 73-64 basketball triumph over Marquette. Madden hit 12-of-16 field goals and collected eight rebounds. Doug Ingalls added 12 points and 10 assists.

Dave Archer ran his career scoring record to 1,016 points, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Manistique Emeralds from dropping a 76-64 decision to the Ishpeming Hematites. Archer poured in 37 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in this match-up. Steve Cevigney paced the Hematites with 24 points and 18 boards.

Jan. 21, 1985 — Two Manistique boxers qualified for the national Golden Gloves junior finals by winning bouts in their hometown. Guy Bosanic defeated Fred Adams of Indiana and Travis Pinkney of Ohio in 119-pound matches and Bucky Cousineau beat Mike McKenzie of Cleveland, Oh. in his lone 70-pound bout.

Jan. 23, 1985 — The Escanaba Eskymos ended a three-game losing streak in a 77-69 conquest of Ishpeming. Scott Peterson scored 27 points. Scott Decker hit a season-high 17. Dave Willette tallied 14 and Brad Belanger got a season-best 12 points and 10 assists.
