Sports flashback 1/12-1/18

Jan. 12, 1970 — Wayne Marshall sank a last-second field goal, lifting the Gladstone Braves to a 75-73 basketball victory over the Munising Mustangs. Cliff Young scored 30 points and Marshall added 21. Dave Wickstrom led the Mustangs with 29.

Tim Connors and Gary Brunngraeber hit 10 points each, helping the Rock Little Giants post a 51-44 triumph over the Watersmeet Nimrods. Tony VanDamme grabbed 20 rebounds for Perkins. Mark Wasson paced the Nimrods with 12 points.

Dennis Lancour and Bob Gregg scored hat tricks, leading the Escanaba Hawks to an 8-4 hockey victory at Petoskey. Dennis Bourdeau and Richard Menard netted the remaining goals and Mike King stopped 37 shots.

Jan. 14, 1970 — The Escanaba Eskymos scored four in double digits in a 76-65 basketball triumph over the Holy Name Crusaders. Tom Kangas led the way with 19 points. Mike Cousineau added 17 and Gene Timmer and Bob Gauthier finished with 13 apiece. Bill Skradski scored 20 for the Crusaders. Joe Harvey tallied 19 and Dan Young chipped in with 10.

Jan. 17, 1970 — Ken Simonsen tossed in 26 points as the Perkins Yellowjackets coasted to an 80-44 victory over the Grand Marais Polar Bears. Joe Coulliard hit 24 points and Bob VanDamme collected 22 points and 22 rebounds.

Jan. 15, 1975 — Steve Towns scored 15 points, leading the Gladstone Braves past the Manistique Emeralds 67-64. Mike Boddy added 14 and Bruce Oman had 11. Bill Pistulka paced the Emeralds with 21 points and 14 rebounds and Jay Ketcik had 10 points and 14 boards.

Jan. 16, 1975 — Vince Stanchina scored three goals, including one on a penalty shot, helping the Escanaba Lions post a 4-2 squirt hockey victory over Operating Engineers Local 324. Lions’ goaltender Brian Franks, who allowed two breakaway goals, had nine saves.

Jan. 18, 1975 — The Perkins Yellowjackets overcame a 16-point halftime deficit to upend the previously undefeated Marenisco Milltowners 70-67. Mark Branstrom led the Yellowjackets with 24 points and Jeff Depuydt had 16.

The Escanaba Eskymos weren’t as fortunate as they dropped a 59-47 decision at West Iron County. Mark Beveridge scored nine points for the Eskymos. Randy Thunander led the Wykons with 16.

Marty Pyke hit a career-high 22 points as the Rapid River Rockets squeezed past the Eben Eagles 65-64 in overtime. Steve Boyer added 20 points and Pat Gullickson had 12. Craig Chartier poured in a career-best 37 points and Joe Little tallied 15 for Eben.
