Second quarter slump costly as Jets fall to Knights
SPALDING — Second quarter woes proved to be too costly for Powers North Central girls basketball Thursday night as they fell 48-31 to Norway.
Norway outscored the Jets 23-2 in the second quarter. The Jets had a 14-11 lead, when Norway went on a 18-0 run. Knights junior Paytan Carlson hit a corner three to tie the game at 14. Sophomore Lila Kleikamp knocked down a mid-range jumper to give the Knights their first lead of the game at 16-14.
“It was kind of exciting coming into this game,” Kleikamp said. “The team wanted to get this one for me. Having gone here it was a special game for me.”
Knights senior Mary Cavagnetto drove in for a layup and followed it up with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to extend the Knights lead to 21-14. Norway senior Anna Falk had back-to-back layups for four of her seven points to extend the lead to 25-14.
Knights junior Kara Stanchina went in for a layup and Kleikamp followed it up with a 3-pointer to give the Knights a 29-14 lead into the half.
“I really didn’t know what to expect tonight,” Knights coach Brian Adams said. “We were down our best player and when she has been out for foul trouble or with the injury we have kind of struggled and we settled down in the second quarter and got into rhythm and made some big shots.”
The Jets had 18 turnovers on the night, but played well in the first, third and fourth quarters. Jets junior Dalyn Otradovec had had eight of her 11 points in the first quarter as the Jets outscored the Knights 12-6 in the first.
“We had a lot of breakdowns on defense in the second quarter that hurt us,” Jets coach Brooke Grandquist said. “We are a young team but we kept fighting and didn’t get down on ourselves. We had a good attitude. We just have to work on the things that hurt us.”
Jets freshman Addison Otradovec had 10 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
North Central returns to action Tuesday at Florence.
