North Central girls fall to Forest Park

SPALDING — The Crystal Falls Forest Park girls dialed long distance for separation here Friday night in a 55-34 basketball triumph over the Powers North Central Jets.

North Central led 6-5 with three minutes left in the first quarter in this Skyline Central Conference match-up before the Trojans answered with a 14-2 run.

Forest Park, which sank five 3-point shots late in the opening frame, extended its lead to 19-8 on a 20-foot jumper by senior Delany Wagner.

After North Central senior Kate Linder hit 1-of-3 free throws to open the second, Forest Park surged to a 25-9 lead on a jumper from top of the key by freshman Audrey Williams.

“It got contagious,” Forest Park coach Kim Bjork said. “We’ve been really working on our shooting and I think the girls are starting to believe they can make these shots. We’re not a real big team. We need to be able to hit the outside shots and find creative ways to score inside. We had some nice looks inside by the elbow. They’re very young, but bigger than us. When we worked the ball inside, we got some open layups.”

The Trojans, who added four trifectas in the second frame, gained a 35-16 cushion on a 22-foot jumper by junior Elsie Williams shortly before halftime.

North Central scored moments before the intermission and junior Dalyn Otradovec hit a layup on a pass from senior Kate Linder, but still trailed 37-20 early in the third.

A putback by freshman Evie Anderson gave the Trojans a 46-23 cushion with one second remaining in the third quarter.

The Trojans took their biggest lead midway through the fourth (55-25) on an eight-foot jumper from the left baseline by junior Jessie Loehr before the Jets finished with nine unanswered points.

“They didn’t give up,” Jets’ coach Brooke Granquist said. “Their nine 3-pointers in the first half were a dagger. Our girls kept defending well and did a nice job inside. It comes down to situational stuff. They need to learn how to work with each other, although I think they’re adapting well.”

Elise Williams led the Trojans (5-7) with 17 points. Freshman Audrey Williams added 11 and junior Lily Sarder had nine. They finished with 11 triples and committed 15 turnovers.

“This whole year is about getting better,” Bjork said. “I think the girls realize it takes time. This was whirlwind of a week for us. It was nice to see them come out with some energy. It was also nice to come out and hit some shots right away.”

Dalyn Otradovac scored 12 points and Addison Otradovec hit nine for the Jets (0-10), who finished with 21 miscues.

“Dalyn is getting more confident with her inside game,” Granquist said. “Addison is good at making space for herself. She’s also good inside and is a good ballhandler.”
