Mid Pen girls fall to scorching Brimley squad
ST. NICHOLAS — A 23-0 run to start the second quarter was too much for Mid Peninsula girls basketball to overcome as it fell 57-16 against Brimley on Monday.
Brimley senior Addison Carrick started the run with a 3-pointer from the wing. Junior Calie Tremblay hit a pair of 3-pointer’s to give the Bays a 25-6 lead.
Carrick drove to the basket for a layup and sophomore Lily Carrick followed it up with a 3-pointer from the wing to extend the Bays lead to 33-6. Brimley junior Khloe Dumas drove hard to the basket for the layup and the foul. Dumas converted the free throw and the Bays led 36-6.
“We were down 8-6 early,” Wolverines coach Eric VanDamme said. “We looked up and we were down 36-6. When turnovers happen that fast, bad things happen quickly.”
The Wolverines committed 24 turnovers in the first half and had trouble breaking the full-court press by Brimley.
The Bays started the third quarter on a 10-0 run. Lily Carrick hit a three and Tremblay followed it up with a 3-pointer of her own to extend the Bays lead to 43-8. Addison Carrick took a pass and went right to the basket for the layup and moments later Tremblay scored a layup off a Wolverines turnover to extend the lead to 47-8.
The Bays had three players in double figures as Addison Carrick had 16 points while Calie Tremblay added 15 and Lily Carrick had 10.
The Wolverines were led by Kaia Branstrom with nine points.
The Wolverines will be back in action Friday at Carney-Nadeau.
