Hannahville hoops sweeps Maplewood Baptist

HANNAHVILLE — It was a successful homecoming for the Hannahville Soaring Eagles as its basketball teams prevailed in a pair of barnburners here Saturday.

The boys outlasted Kinross Maplewood Baptist Academy 80-68 in overtime and a vastly improved girls’ team hung on for a 36-33 victory.

Hannahville’s boys also defeated the Black Bears in a 92-79 shootout and the girls earned a 46-40 triumph on Parents’ Night Friday.

“We’re very happy with the effort the girls gave,” Hannahville coach Seth Miller said. “Maplewood Baptist fought hard. It was a good game. We started feeling the pressure in the end, but you need high-pressure games to grow.”

The Soaring Eagles (6-4) gained a 36-25 advantage on a turn-around 15-foot shot by junior Laniceya Malinowski with 3:55 left in this Northern Lights League contest.

Maplewood (3-8), however, sliced its deficit to the final three-point margin on a layup by junior Ellie Jentoft with 35 seconds remaining.

“We have a real young team,” Black Bears’ coach Rachael Chromy said. “We have one junior, four sophomores and our bench is all seventh-graders. Our shots didn’t drop, but we can’t do anything about that now. They did good. The effort was there. We have something to build on. We’re happy with how they controlled themselves.”

Maplewood took an early 7-0 lead before Hannahville responded with eight unanswered points, taking its first lead on a layup by senior Jaylin Keshick, set up on a pass from junior Brittany Thunder.

The Soaring Eagles concluded a 10-0 run midway through the second stanza on a putback by eighth-grader Shondreya Shawano for an 18-8 lead.

A pair of free throws by Jentoft brought the Black Bears within 19-13 with 1:31 left in the second before eighth-grader Grayce Williams sank an eight-foot set shot and Shawano added a pair of free throws for a 23-13 halftime cushion.

Keshick scored 13 points and Williams added 12 for Hannahville, which committed 11 of its 19 turnovers in the fourth frame.

“At the end we asked the girls to do a couple things they haven’t done before, and they executed,” Miller said. “We had two people breaking their pressure. That’s growth. Between homecoming and parents’ night we had two good games in a row.”

Sophomore Haleigh Frank led the Black Bears with 10 points. Jentoft and sophomore Lilly LaFave had nine apiece. Maplewood had 18 turnovers.

The Hannahville boys were trailing 68-66 following an eight-foot jumper by senior Ian Browne late in regulation.

Senior Joe Beaver forced the overtime by hitting a layup on an inbound pass from senior DaShawn Metzger with 4.5 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Soaring Eagles (10-3) took charge in the overtime.

Senior Jayden Sagataw drained a 12-foot jumper early in the overtime. Metzger and Sagataw then sank jumpers from top of the key, giving Hannahville a 76-68 cushion at 1:54.

“It was a very good game,” Sagataw said. “They were tired and we kept pushing the pace. DaShawn’s jumper from top of the key was a big momentum changer. We felt real comfortable once we got the lead back. We had to keep the pressure on them and not make any mistakes on offense. This is a big confidence boost and gives us a lot of momentum going into next weekend.”

Sagataw scored 33 points while running his career total to 974. Metzger hit 14 and senior Jesse Wabanimkee had 12 for the Soaring Eagles, who led 34-25 at halftime.

Hannahville led 36-26 early in the third, then trailed 48-42 late in that quarter.

A layup by Sagataw gave the Soaring Eagles a 49-48 lead with 32 seconds left in the third.

Metzger then scored on a 21-foot set shot early in the fourth for a 51-48 lead.

It was nip-n-tuck through the remainder of regulation until Hannahville gained the upper hand in the overtime.

“They’re definitely a tough match-up,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “We like to run and they like to grind it out. I think we were able to execute and force enough turnovers and tough shots and not panic. It’s our style of basketball. Compliments to Joe (Beaver). He really stepped up big and this was a big weekend for Jayden. They had to make a couple adjustments af halftime to try to shut him down.”

Sophomore Caden Chromy led the Black Bears (6-6) with 40 points and junior Carver Day hit 17.

“He (Chromy) is a unique size,” Bintner said. “He’s able to score in the paint and get lot of rebounds and putbacks. He has a size advantage and is aggressive going after the ball. He can hit from outside and inside.”

Maplewood, which hosts Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter Tuesday, committed 21 turnovers. The Soaring Eagles finished with 11.

“We played a tough game,” Maplewood assistant coach Travis Hill said. “We started locking down on defense which was a huge improvement from last (Friday) night. Hannahville has a tough team and is well coached. Sometimes fatigue can be a factor and our guys did a good job fighting through the tiredness. They played with a lot of grit and determination.”

The Hannahville boys visit Munising Baptist Thursday and both teams host Mackinac Island Friday and Saturday.
