BR-H, North Central wrestling battle to the wire
SPALDING — The Powers North Central and Bark River-Harris wrestling teams got caught up in a numbers game here Monday night, each dropping a 71-12 decision to the Menominee Maroons.
North Central salvaged a split in the finale, outlasting the Broncos 27-21.
“This is our first home victory as the Jets,” coach John Raab said. “We lost to them earlier in the season (Dec. 7 at Ishpeming Westwood). It’s exciting as a coach to see our kids are improving. We left six weight classes open against Menominee. The kids who wrestled against them, wrestled well.”
Jets’ senior Madalynn Corrigan came through in the clutch, sealing the verdict by pinning BR-H junior Emma Riley 64 seconds into the 126-pound match.
The Broncos tied the score at 21 when sophomore Josh Webber defeated freshman Tre Gomez by technical fall (36-20) at 120 pounds moments earlier.
Corrigan admitted she had mixed emotions when freshman teammate Myles Corrigan took a 13-6 decision from her brother (BR-H sophomore) Mitch Corrigan in Monday’s 190 bout.
“I was cheering for both wrestlers,” she said. “He’s my brother and I do love him, but I’m also a team captain, and I have to support our team. Winning the last match tonight is little bit of a confidence builder.”
Corrigan was fresh from a runner-up finish Friday in a girls’ invitational at downstate Ovid-Elsie.
“My first two matches at Ovid-Elsie went well,” she added. “Then I kind of faded in the third match which means I have a lot of work to do.”
Menominee, as it did against North Central, also took six forfeits from BR-H.
“We started with four wrestlers in my first year as coach and now we’re up to 24,” Maroons’ coach David Clarke said. “We have five seniors this year, but we have five eighth-graders coming up next year. We should have a good team next season. We have five girls right now and we’re making a push to get up to 10. I think the kids have started to buy into our program. The sophomores have matured tremendously from last year. The kids are all cheering for each other which is huge.
“Assistant coach Don Odom has also helped tremendously, and I work at the school now which I think also helps. We’re getting to know each other better.”
The Maroons, who recorded five pins against the Jets and four against the Broncos, travel to Suring, Wis. Thursday.
North Central freshman Maizy Olson (113) pinned Cole in 4:35 and Riley at 2:43.
Jets’ sophomore Cooper Raab (132) needed just 75 seconds to pin Menominee senior Ethan Short.
BR-H’s Mitch Corrigan pinned Menominee sophomore Jacob Cunningham at 5:14 and junior teammate Charles Walker (285) pinned Maroons’ junior Ryan Marzian in 2:22.
The Broncos travel to Munising for Saturday’s Mid-Peninsula Conference meet. The Jets go to Marinette for the Border Battle Saturday.
