Mid Peninsula hoops swept by Mackinac Island
ST. NICHOLAS — The Rock Mid Peninsula basketball teams will have to wait until the new year to break into the win column.
Mid Pen’s boys dropped a 51-42 decision to Mackinac Island and the girls fell to the Lakers 45-25 here Wednesday night.
Both teams are 0-4 this season.
“We didn’t move the ball as well as we should against their zone,” Mid Pen boys’ coach Carl Brunngraeber said. “The effort was better than last night (in Tuesday’s 61-44 loss at Big Bay de Noc), but we still need to work on taking care of the ball and working as a team.”
The Wolverines took a 38-37 lead early in the fourth quarter of this non-conference contest.
A jump shot from the lane by freshman Jordan Fisher sent the Lakers ahead to stay.
Mid Pen was still within 46-41 with 2:35 remaining before the Lakers scored the last five points.
Mackinac Island led 13-11 after the opening frame before the teams see-sawed through the second stanza.
Mid Pen took an 18-15 lead on a seven-foot set shot by sophomore Cyler Brunngraeber early in the second.
A layup by Fisher brought the Lakers within 18-17 before the Wolverines extended their lead to 21-17.
Fisher then hit a six-foot jumper to bring the Lakers within two points and senior Mason McLean tied the score at 23 on a 19-foot jumper.
Mackinac Island (2-3) took a 27-25 lead on a floater from the boulevard by senior Vincent Davis 42 seconds before halftime.
The Wolverines, however, tied the score at 27 shortly before the intermission.
Davis drained a 17-foot jumper from the left baseline to put the Lakers in front 29-27 to begin the third.
The Wolverines pulled even at 33 on a putback by senior Trey Micheau, but trailed 37-33 at the end of the third.
Mid Pen shaved its deficit to 37-36 on Cyler Brunngraber’s 20-foot jumper from the right wing prior to taking its last lead early in the fourth.
Junior Dane Micheau scored 15 points and Brunngraeber finished with 11 for the Wolverines, who outrebounded the Lakes 41-32.
“I thought Cyler played his best game tonight,” coach Brunngraeber said. “We forced some turnovers and had 10 less than we had all year. This one really hurts after playing a tough schedule to start.”
The Wolverines had 14 miscues and the Lakers finished with 11.
Mid Pen’s girls trailed 41-19 after the third quarter before trimming their deficit to 18 points on a pair of free throws and lay-in by senior Abbigale Klee early in the fourth.
“They’re new to basketball,” Mid Pen coach Eric VanDamme said. “Their effort is outstanding. We’re just working on their putting the ball in the basket. We’re looking forward to getting a little more comfortable. They’re working hard on defense.”
The Lakers added a pair of buckets, gaining a 45-23 advantage on a jumper from the free throw circle by senior Madison Gamble midway through the fourth.
Klee scored 12 points and Gamble paced Mackinac Island with 25. Junior Lakelyn Barker added 10 for the Lakers, who improved to 7-1 and visit Big Bay de Noc Jan. 3-4.
“I would say we played pretty well, Lakers’ coach Mary Patay said. “Maddy is playing pretty well and Lakelyn is our leading rebounder. We haven’t seen Beaver Island yet and Big Bay is going to be tough.”
