High School hoops roundup: Esky boys conquers Jeffers, BR-H girls earn first win of the year
ESCANABA –Monday night’s high school basketball action saw Escanaba boys and Bark River-Harris girls earn pivotal wins. Here’s what went down:
Girl’s basketball
Bark River-Harris 56, Norway 54
After knocking on the door to victory, the Broncos were finally allowed into the winner’s club with a road win over Norway.
Sophomore Emma Zawada led the Broncos with 19 points, including eight points in the first quarter and eight in the second half. Junior Julia Nault added 17 points which featured five 3-pointers with four dropping in the second quarter. Senior Hope Varoni added 11 points and senior Marissa Ives produced nine points.
Norway’s Lauren Adam led all players with 26 points.
The Broncos (1-3) trip to face Iron Mountain at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Boys’ basketball
Escanaba 41, Jeffers 37
The Eskymos fended off a second-half rally by the Jets to earn their fourth win of the season. Esky senior Javon Stevenson led all players with 21 points, finishing 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Senior Nick Garcia added eight points and junior Taylor Asgaard had six points. Alex Morgan, Owen Fields and Hayven Sandoval-Nolde each had two points.
The Eskymos (4-3) host Bark River-Harris at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Negaunee 63, Gladstone 31
The Braves’ (1-3) early-season gauntlet saw them fall on the road to Negaunee (3-2) on Monday night.
Sophomore Lonnie Davey paced Gladstone with 10 points. Freshman Alex Prims had eight points. Junior Mike Rexford added six points.
The Braves host Escanaba at 7 p.m. Friday.
