CARNEY — Florence senior Kamdan Johnson hit the 1,000 point milestone, but the celebration was short lived as Carney-Nadeau picked up a 33-30 win in girls basketball action Thursday.

The Wolves took a 6-0 lead out of the gate on three layups by senior Mariska Laurila who had 17 on the night. After a layup by the Bobcats. Wolves freshman Jayden Laurin connected on a 3-pointer from the wing and the Wolves extended their lead to 9-2.

Bobcats freshman Miley VanDenHeuuel got her second basket of the game and Kamdan Johnson drove in for a layup putting her one point away from 1000.

The Wolves had a 9-6 lead going into the second quarter, but the Bobcats continued their 10-0 run over the end of the first and start of the second quarter. Bobcats freshman CeCe Mills had a layup that was followed up by baskets by Kelsi Chrisman and Naomi Millan to give the Bobcats a 12-9 lead.

The Wolves answered back as senior Grace Maule hit a 3-pointer late in the second quarter and the two teams went into the half tied at 12.

“It was a tough defensive nail-biter,” Wolves coach Paul Polfus said. “Games like that it comes down to who can make the big shot and tonight it was us.”

Florence was first on the board in the second half on a mid-range jumper by Johnson pushing her past the 1,000 point milestone. “It felt great to get the milestone,” Johnson said. “We were not able to get the win both teams played well and both defenses were tough.”

The Wolves answered back on a 3-pointer by Maule that put the Wolves back in front at 15-14.

The Bobcats responded with an 8-0 run including for points from Johnson who had nine on the night and the Bobcats took a 22-15 lead.

Laurila scored nine of the Wolves next 11 points and tied the game at 26.

“It’s all about instinct,” Laurila said. “When I over think things I tend to make mistakes so I just knew we had to focus in and work hard.”

VanDenHeuuel drove in for a layup to give the lead back to the Bobcats at 30-29, but the Wolves hit four of their last six free throws down the stretch to put the game on ice.

The Wolves return to action in the Carney-Nadeau Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27-28.
