CARNEY — A 10-0 run to start the second quarter led Carney-Nadeau boys basketball to a 64-48 victory over Engadine here Thursday.

Wolves’ senior Sam Salo ignited the run with a driving layup for the basket and the foul. Salo converted the free throw to put the Wolves in the lead at 18-16. Salo followed it up with a pair of 3-pointers to extend the lead to 24-16.

“The first quarter was pretty rough for us,” Salo said. “We always seem to have a bad quarter every team usually does. We needed to come out of that the right way and I think we did tonight. We made some big shots and forced a good number of turnovers.”

Engadine ended the Wolves run on a driving layup by freshman Archer Nelson to cut the deficit to 24-18.

The Wolves answered back with a 8-0 run including 3-pointers from sophomores Beau Maule and Cullen Kasbohm to extend the Wolves lead to 32-18.

“We know our game is at the 3-point line,” Kasbohm said. “Tonight we were able to get in the post get position and get some rebounds which was our focus as a team coming into this game.”

The Eagles were able to break up the Wolves run again on a 3-pointer from the wing to cut the deficit to 32-21.

Carney-Nadeau answered back with a 3-pointer from Kasbohm to put the Wolves up 35-21.

“Shooting is what I do,” Kasbohm said. “I shoot with a lot of confidence. A miss doesn’t really affect me, I just do what I do best.”

Eagles sophomore Jackson Oven Drove to the basket for a layup to get back to within 12. The Wolves responded with a 3-pointer by Kayne Wilson and a mid-range jumper by Salo and the Wolves took a 40-23 lead into the halftime break.

The Wolves got a 3-pointer by Kasbohm to open the second half and extend the Wolves lead to 53-34.

The Wolves put the game away going on an 11-3 run to end the game. Kasbohm led the way for the Wolves with 19 points, Salo had 15 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists and Maule had 11.

The Eagles were led by Cameron Loebach with 13 points. Oven had 12 points and Nelson had 11.

The Wolves return to action in the Carney-Nadeau Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27-28.

“We are looking to come out and have a good showing in the holiday tournament,” Polfus said. “It’s fun for all the kids and the season is long but it’s nice to have this over the holiday break.”

The Wolves will be joined by Rapid River, Superior Central and Hannahville for the tournament.
