Basketball roundup: Derouin drops 34 in OT win, Esky girls drop season opener
ESCANABA — To some people, snow indicates the beginning on a long, grueling winter.
It also indicates that basketball season is in full force across the state of Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
Tuesday saw a handful of out of town games. Here’s what went down:
Boys’ basketball
Bark River-Harris 58, West Iron County 57 (overtime)
The Broncos and Wykons needed more than 32 minutes to determine a winner on Tuesday night. In the end it was BR-H junior Brayden Derouin’s 34 points. He netted 11-points in the third quarter and six points in overtime to boost the Broncos to their first win of the season.
Derouin knocked down three triples and was 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Gabe Spear and Jacob Mileski each added eight points for the Broncos. Olin Johnson and Gionni McDonough each had four points for the Broncos.
The Broncos led 21-17 at the half and extended the lead to 36-29 after three quarters. A 19-point fourth quarter by the Wykons sent the game to overtime.
Derouin scored five of the 10 points in overtime to secure the win.
The Broncos host Escanaba at 7:15 p.m. Thursday. The Wykons travel to face Iron Mountain at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Hannahville 49, Superior Central 33
Hannahville’s Sam Beaver went for 17 in a 49-33 victory over Superior Central Tuesday. Kobe Shawano had eight points for the soaring Eagles.
Superior Central had 3 in double-figures with Zander Bigger, Ryder Kroupa and Blake Tanner each scoring 10. The Cougars shot 1-of-17 from behind the arc in the loss.
The Soaring Eagles led 27-21 at the half, and outscored the Cougars 22-12 in the second half.
The Cougars host Mid Peninsula at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The Soaring Eagles stay on the road to face North Dickinson at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 9.

Girls’ basketball
Negaunee 69, Escanaba 28
The Eskymos opened their 2024-25 season on the road against Negaunee. The Miners jumped early, taking a 22-9 lead after the first quarter and held a 41-13 lead at the break.
Esky senior Emerson Salo and junior Landry Bray had seven points each. The Miners had three players score in double figures.
The Eskymos are currently scheduled to host Sault Ste. Marie at 7:15 p.m. Thursday. The Miners trip to face Houghton at 5:45 p.m. on Friday.
