Negaunee girls claim D1 U.P. Title
KINGSFORD — The Negaunee girls were in the hunt much of the way prior to settling for runner-up honors in the Upper Peninsula Division 1 Track and Field Finals here Saturday.
Sault Ste. Marie brought the championship trophy home for the first time since 2001 after scoring 117 points.
The Miners finished with 94, followed by Gladstone 65 and defending champion Marquette 58.
Negaunee freshman Keira Waterman became a double-winner by taking the 400-meter dash in 59.23 seconds and 800 (2:28.2). Classmate Sadie Rogers captured the 100 hurdles (16.65).
“I didn’t really know what to expect here today,” Rogers said. “I had a good start and just pushed myself real hard. I could hear the crowd. It was very important for me to win this one. I also thought my chances in the 300 were pretty good. I knew I had to push it.”
It was Sault freshman Ahnaka Oshelski who won the 300s at 48.29, edging Rogers by .01 second. Marquette freshman Chloe Jackson took third (49.56).
In the 100 hurdles, Rogers was followed by Sault junior Annabelle Fazzari (17.07), junior teammate Madison Pekrul (17.19) and Oshelski (17.23).
Marquette sophomore Ella Fure took the 1600 (5:31.33), followed by Houghton sophomore Tessa Rautiola (5:35.93) and Marquette junior Monet Argeropoulos (5:37.27).
“I wanted to have fun and asked God to pull me through,” Fure said. “I knew if I just trusted in God, He would get me through. My mom is pretty sick and couldn’t be here. I just wanted to do this for her.”
Rautiola ran the third leg of the 3200 relay (10:10.38) and copped the open 3200 (12:13.39), edging Fure by .07 second. Argeropoulos again placed third (12:23.91).
“Our school record is 10:08,” Rautiola said. “We didn’t get the record this year, although we’re absolutely happy we won it. There was miscommunication in the exchange zone which created some confusion. We weren’t in the proper place for one of our handoffs. Otherwise, I think we would have had it.”
Gladstone junior Jacie Tuljus took the 200 (26.85) and Waterman was second (27.48).
Tuljus also won the 100 (12.65) and anchored the Braves’ 400 relay which set the U.P. record at 50.78, topping the previous best (51.11) by Marquette three years ago.
“My starts were slow, but what we did in the 400 relay was good for today,” Tuljus said. “Everybody was pretty hyped. We’re happy with it. Overall, I’m happy with the way everything went.”
Ishpeming Westwood junior Faith Spiroff was a double-winner, taking the high jump (5-0) and long jump (16-4.25).
Manistique senior Danielle Lund took shot put with a personal-best throw of 38-7.75.
Sault senior Katie Anderson was second in shot (34-1.75) with junior teammate Annabelle Fazzari taking third (34-0).
Anderson was the winner in discus (115-3) with Fazzari runner-up (101-0) and Lund third (100-4).
Calumet senior Caitlyn Strom won pole vault at 10 feet, edging Westwood junior Lexi Olson on a tie-breaker. Escanaba senior Sophia Wagner placed third (9-0).
