ESCANABA — Ever wonder what competitors at Escanaba Speedway are like outside of the dirt track? Well, we have the answer for you.

This week, get to know Matt Valiquette. He drives the No. 53 car in the IMCA sport mod series. Daily Press sports reporter Adam Hinch sat down and chatted with Valiquette about anything and everything.

Adam Hinch: What got you into this hobby?

Matt Valiquette: Sitting in these grandstands watching my dad and uncles wheel modifieds in the early 70’s. Never thought about getting into a car until later on but I was a gear head early on. I loved the smell of race fuel and clay I was hooked very early.

AH: What is your best racing moment in your career so far?

MV: There is quite a few of them actually. I have been fortunate to win quite a few races and a couple championships and the overall competitive fuel and the camaraderie is really unique in this sport.

AH: Favorite hobby outside of racing?

MV: I love my gardening. My bird dogs and going bird hunting and getting married this September and getting ready for that.

AH: What kind of music do you like?

MV: Mainly country music. I grew up in the 80’s, so those 80’s hair bands were also big with me.

AH: Who is your favorite NASCAR driver past and present?

MV: I was definitely a Dale Earnhardt fan back in the day as well as his son Dale Jr.. Today, who doesn’t like Kyle Larson? He is one of the most talented drivers out there.

AH: Favorite NFL team?

MV: The Packers, there isn’t any other team is there? From Favre and Rodgers to Jordan Love they are always fun to watch.

AH: Tacos or pizza?

MV: Do I have to pick one? I would say both on occasion. I try to spend a lot of time in the gym so I can eat the things I like.

AH: Pepsi or Coke products?

MV: I actually don’t drink soda, but I do enjoy a nice Cabernet after business hours.

AH: Ice fishing or spring fishing?

MV: Just starting to get into fishing. Not very good at it, but I enjoy some good bass fishing.

AH: Baseball or Basketball to watch on TV?

MV: I would have to go with March Madness on that.

AH: Best fish fry in Delta County?

MV: I got to go with my own on that.

AH: What is your favorite part of the U.P. State Fair?

MV: I enjoy meeting new people, the livestock exhibits and all the food vendors.

AH: Past racer in Escanaba who had an impact on you?

MV: Oh, definitely my dad. We all look up to our dads, but I would also say Bob and Herb Iverson. They were legends here and you can’t help but love them.
