House divided: Adrianna Getzloff signs with University of Michigan, Ava Getzloff signs with Michigan State University
ESCANABA — The victors valiant. The conquering heroes. The champions of the west.
These are three things the Getzloff family hails in their household as fans of the University of Michigan.
Adrianna Getzloff, 1/3 of the Getzloff triplets, gets to call Ann Arbor home after signing her letter of intent to compete in collegiate rowing for the University of Michigan on Thursday.
Ava Getzloff, 1/3 of the Getzloff triplets, also signed her letter of intent to compete collegiality in the sport of rowing on Thursday. Except she didn’t sign with Michigan. She signed with in-state rival Michigan State University.
“There’s always been a rivalry between the two,” Ava Getzloff said. “Having one (of us) to to each (side of the rivalry) is going to be fun to see us competing against each other.”
Adrianna Getzloff chose Michigan because of its athletics and academics. It’s a school she always wanted to attend. When the opportunity arose, she didn’t hesitate.
She also chose to row for the Wolverines because of the team’s tight-knit feel.
“The team is really close, and they have their values set,” Adrianna Getzloff said. “Their motto is ‘DOGA.’ It’s do it, give it, own it, appreciate it. They really stick with that, and it appealed to me a lot.”
The duo will also compete against each other on a regular basis. The Wolverines and Spartans collide head-to-head at least one time every season. The duo will go head-to-head in the Big Ten Championships.
Those moments are ones they are looking forward to.
“We’ve been racing each other our whole lives,” Adrianna Getzloff said. “We keep our competition pretty friendly.”
While the sisters are attending rival schools, they also have the luxury of being close to each other as they enter a new chapter of their lives. The two schools are separated by less than 65 miles.
“I think that’ll be really nice,” Adrianna Getzloff said. “We’ve been together our whole lives because we do everything together. It’ll be nice to have our own spots to be, but also be able to go visit each other.”
