BR-H captures conference title
NORWAY — The Bark River-Harris Broncos captured their second straight Skyline Central Conference softball title here Tuesday, topping the Norway Knights 5-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.
“Winning the conference for the second year in a row was very exciting,” said BR-H coach Jen Goodrich. “We trailed by three runs going into the sixth inning. We knew we had to make a comeback, although the girls didn’t know it was for the conference title. It was nice to have that rally. It was a good way to shake them up going into their last at-bats.”
The Broncos, who did all their scoring in the sixth, grabbed the lead on Cierra Ouradnik’s three-run homer and Haily Boucher went 3-for-3.
“Haily put the ball in play and got our momentum going,” said Goodrich. “It was a good, well-played game.”
Eden Oswald took the win, striking out seven, walking three and allowing eight hits.
“Eden found her groove early and got stronger as the game went on,” said Goodrich. “They’re definitely a good hitting team.”
The Broncos dropped the nightcap 8-7, leaving the tying run on third in the seventh frame.
Christy Fitzgerald collected three hits and Tatiana LaFave added two.
“Christy isn’t a regular starter, but she did a fantastic job today,” said Goodrich. “Overall, we didn’t hit as well as we did in the first game.”
Esther Oswald absorbed the loss, striking out two, walking five and giving up 12 hits.
The Broncos conclude their regular season in a twinbill at Munising today at 4.
