Respect the flag
EDITOR:
We are fortunate to live in a nation that allows us, even encourage us, to display our American flags. Some countries don’t have that privilege.
But driving around town, it’s so disheartening to see some of the flags. Several businesses and homes in the area are flying flags that are tattered, torn and look like they’ve gone through battle. There is no reason for this.
Please take the time today to check your flags. If it needs to be replaced, please do so. Or at least take it down. The flags may be properly retired at either the American Legion in Gladstone in their white box on the corner or at the Escanaba Elks Lodge in the blue bucket in back of the building. Both places will retire the flags at a patriotic ceremony on Flag Day, June 14th, which is open to the public.
Please check your flags. And remember, “Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” – Unknown.
