Observations
EDITOR:
A letter to the editor by another identified me as a Democrat. Although not offended by that assumption I am not a member of the Democratic Party. The same individual spoke of the “Democratic platform being a masterclass in economic sabotage and foreign policy blunders” among other baseless claims that are not supported by facts.
Speaking of economic sabotage, the Wall Street Journal editorial on 9 April 2025 included the following: “It would be hard to find better evidence that markets believe the biggest threat to the world economy is Mr. Trump’s tariffs.” Also, 9 of the 10 largest single-day point losses in Dow Jones history have occurred under Trump. To be fair, point losses over time are not the best comparisons, nonetheless, they do indicate that the Trump record on the economy as measured by the Dow Jones is less than stellar.
Between January 1989 and February 2024 1.3 million jobs were created with Republicans in the Oval Office despite the party’s reputation for being business-friendly. With Democrats in power 49.4 million jobs were created. (The Economist – 19 March 2024). Facts “trump” myths on Earth 1.
Before the Trump inauguration, the U.S. economy was the envy of the world, and no one was predicting a recession. Today (9 April), even after the pause in some of the highest tariffs many economists still believe a recession is more likely than not.
Per the purported “foreign policy blunders”, I don’t believe anything that has
.0 been done by a Democrat administration in the past 30 years has been more harmful than the destruction of our alliances, the “attacks” on our neighbors, and the defunding of programs like USAID.
Finally, the current Trump Administration has already shown its Cabinet to be the least competent in history and, that has consequences.
For example, a few weeks ago Secretary Kennedy canceled the meeting that historically was convened to determine which flu vaccine should be prepared for the next flu season. I have always found some comfort with the knowledge I was vaccinated but now wonder what next season will bring. Will vaccines be available? Will we be given older and less effective vaccines? I don’t know the answer to these questions, but unfortunately, I doubt that anyone in the Trump Administration knows either.
