Invest in our schools
EDITOR:
“Why should we update the high school? It’s practically brand new.”
“I can’t justify the cost of a new facility for sports–we should focus on curriculum.”
Have you heard similar concerns about Bond Proposal II? I get it–these are valid points, and we’re talking about our hard-earned tax dollars. But please allow me to clarify:
The proposed facility isn’t just a “gym”–it’s a multi-use space for all extracurricular activities. Take the Gladstone Bravebots, for example. This internationally ranked robotics team introduces students to STEM and has a strong track record of graduates pursuing engineering careers. Yet, they currently operate in a classroom with no dedicated space to run their robot. This facility would provide them–and many other programs–the resources they need to thrive.
“Sure–but not all students are on the STEM route. We need to emphasize the importance of trades!”
I couldn’t agree more! This bond would also allow industrial arts to return to Gladstone Middle School. Right now, high school programs occupy the middle school’s shop space, making it impossible to offer woodworking and technical education at the middle school level.
By moving these high school programs to the new facility, we can give younger students earlier exposure to hands-on trades–helping them discover new skills before high school.
And yes, I understand tax fatigue–we all feel it. You may be thinking, “I never expected my tax commitment to the schools to last this long.” But think of it like homeownership. It’s not unusual to take out a 30-year mortgage, only to realize near the end that you need a new roof. Buildings require maintenance and updates–it’s just reality.
Our students deserve the same strong educational foundation as those who came before them. That’s why I choose to invest in our schools–because I want my children to know that this community supports their future and education. Thank you for investing in my education nearly 30 years ago. I hope you’ll join me in investing in the generations to come. Go Braves!
