The threats of microplastics

EDITOR:

I am a very proud Michigan native and lover of all water but especially our Great Lakes. What a treasure we have been entrusted with.

Recently, there is more and more information about the damage and prevalence of microplastics. They are, literally, everywhere, including our water. They are established endocrine disrupters linked to, among other things, obesity and infertility.

Since the Great Lakes comprise 20% of the world’s fresh water, I feel Michigan has an obligation to lead the effort in addressing the threats of microplastics.

The first step in that process is understanding them. The EPA chooses 30 contaminants to study every five years. This is one of those years. I therefore urge Governor Whitmer to petition the EPA to put microplastics on their list of contaminants to be studied. Our health depends on it.
