Bay College marks Community College Month
Bay College has helped thousands of students transform their lives by providing high-quality education with little to no debt, making it the #BestDecisionEver. This April, Bay College is celebrating Community College Month (#CCMonth), a national campaign highlighting the impact and value of community colleges in shaping strong futures. Students, alumni, and community members are encouraged to share their stories and experiences to showcase why Bay College remains a cornerstone of education and workforce development in the Upper Peninsula.
Since opening its doors in 1963, Bay College has awarded 17,906 degrees and certificates to 13,879 graduates. From nursing and welding to business and social work, Bay has launched thousands of careers and strengthened the region’s economy. Today, 70% of Bay students attend part-time, and 84% of degree-seeking students receive financial aid, making higher education accessible to learners of all backgrounds.
“Bay College is an essential part of our community,” shares Dr. Nerita Hughes, President of Bay College. “We serve a diverse student body, including first-generation college students, working adults, and high schoolers getting a head start through dual enrollment. Community College Month is an opportunity to celebrate how Bay helps students achieve their dreams while supporting local businesses with a skilled workforce.”
Bay College’s impact extends beyond the classroom. The college adds over $75 million in alumni-driven economic impact to the region annually, with an additional $11.1 million from operations and $1.4 million from student spending. With 84% of faculty and staff residing in the U.P., Bay remains deeply rooted in the communities it serves.
Across the nation, community colleges provide vital access to higher education, serving as a launchpad for careers and further studies. They educate life-saving healthcare professionals, support local economies, and offer flexible learning options for students balancing work and family commitments. At Bay, 23% of students are adult learners over 25 seeking career advancements or a fresh start.
Community College Month is a time to highlight these contributions and challenge outdated perceptions of two-year colleges. According to national research, Americans recognize community colleges as an excellent investment, yet misconceptions persist.
“Bay College provided the bricks for me to succeed,” said Jean O’Dette, the 2024 Distinguished Alumni of the Year. “My goal is that I will inspire others to allow Bay college to lay the foundation bricks for their success.”
Throughout April, Bay College will engage students, alumni, and supporters in sharing their Bay stories on social media using #CCMonth and #BestDecisionEver.
