Sally J. Cross

STEUBEN — Sally J. Cross, 80, of Steuben, died Thursday, April 10, 2025 at her home surrounded by the love of her caregivers and beloved animals. She was born on August 25, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan to Aaron and Amelia (Goebel) Hanning. Sally’s family moved to Glennie, Michigan at a young age where she grew up and graduated from Glennie High School. She began her working career in Saginaw doing clerical work when she met Terrence J. Cross at their apartment complex. Terry invited her for a ride and she found the love of her life on the back of that motorcycle. They were married February 10, 1968 and together they raised their two sons. In 1970, they moved to Steuben into the home that they built together with family. Sally was a homemaker but also worked beside her husband in the general contracting business. Sally also oversaw the business, accounting, and bookkeeping. Terry and Sally gardened together growing beautiful vegetable and flower gardens. She always had an abundance of houseplants, and her home was always filled with her cats and dogs that she loved. Sally loved her home in the woods where she enjoyed watching the deer, feeding the birds (especially the hummingbirds), and welcoming the ducks that landed in her “Three Ponds.” Sally was a member of the Hiawatha Country Church and was active with Bible Studies at the church. She loved her grandchildren and wanted to be involved in all of their activities.

Sally is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law – Wade and Lynda Cross of Negaunee and Travis and Rebecca Cross of Munising; grandchildren – Wyatt (Ryan Michalesko) Cross, Hannah (Brendon Steinbrecher) Cross, Ian Cross, Honora Cross, Lydia Cross, and Samuel Cross; sister – Vivian Trecha; numerous nieces and nephews; her dogs – Ruby and Burleigh; and her cat – Hank. She was preceded in death by her husband Terry on January 3, 2007, and her siblings Don Hanning, Ray Hanning, Marge Hanning, and Aaron “Junior” Hanning.

Services will be held at the Hiawatha Country Church (4740N State Highway M-94, Manistique, MI 49854) on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Pastor Steve Lange and retired Pastor Paul Varoni will officiate Sally’s service a 11:00 a.m. A fellowship luncheon and time for visiting will take place following the service.
