Paul Betters

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Paul Betters, 88, passed away on February 25, 2025 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Born in 1936 in Spalding, to Lillian (Gagne) and Napolean Betters, Paul attended Powers Spalding School District, graduating in 1955.
Trained as a helicopter mechanic, Paul served two years in the Army in such places as Germany and Lebanon. An especially memorable event was flying over the White House on a test flight in an Army helicopter he’d just repaired. Paul returned to Washington, DC on an Honor Flight in 2015 with his son Bruce.
Upon his return from military service he lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he met the love of his life, Jean Varda, whom he married in 1962. They eventually settled in Bark River, owning his own piece of paradise which he walked almost every day for the nearly 50 years they lived there. Paul worked in maintenance at Mead Paper Company for 27 years, retiring in 1996. Paul and Jean moved to Brookfield, Wisconsin in 2017 to be closer to their sons.
Paul is survived by Jean, his cherished wife of 62 years, treasured sons Michael (Karla), Bruce (Lisa) and Donald (Kathy), adored grandchildren Kayla, Eric, Taylor (Gina), Melissa (Claire), Rachel and Shawn, valued brothers Francis (Nancy), Gerald (Jill) and Thomas (Mary), sister-in-law Lorraine (Phil) Hagedorn, brother-in-law Justin (Sally) Varda, and 26 beloved nieces and nephews.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents, sister Shirley Charlier, mother- and father-in law Henrietta (Richards) and Henry Varda, brothers-in-law James Varda and Henry Varda and his wife Rose, and niece Sally Varda.
His hobbies included walking, four-wheeling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. He was always on the move! But spending time with his friends, family and grandkids were the things he enjoyed the most. Betters get-togethers are legendary!
