GLADSTONE — Joan Lee (Calouette) Palmgren-Stevenson, 93, passed away early Monday morning, March 24, 2025 at her home in Gladstone.

She was born on February 14, 1932 in Escanaba, daughter to Chester J. and Margaret C. (Gunter) Calouette. She graduated from Escanaba High School in 1950.

Over the years, Joan worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator, she also worked for Adam’s Grocery, the Highland Golf Course and Bergman Insurance. She also owned and operated two businesses with Ken; an Evergreen Forest Products business, and Ken’s Shell Service Station.   

On October 9, 1954, Joan married Kenneth Herman Palmgren of Bark River, at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba. During the summer they loved to waterski and picnic; and in the winter they were found riding their Moto Ski snowmobiles with friends and family. They traveled to Nashville, Florida, Las Vegas and Hawaii. They spent over 25 years together enjoying all that life has to offer with family and friends before Ken’s passing on July 3, 1981.

Joan later married Arthur David Stevenson of Rapid River in November 1997, at Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River. They were members of the Gladstone Golf course. Art enjoyed golfing a bit more than Joan. They enjoyed wintering in Naples, Fla. and Gulf Shores, Ala. They often hosted dinner guests at their home; enjoying great conversation. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2008.

Joan enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, reading, baking, traveling and dancing at the Amvets.

Survivors include her two children, Scott (Caz) Palmgren and Julie (James) Liss, both of Bark River; stepchildren, Scott (Debbie) Stevenson, Sheree (Rob) Wilbee, Gary (Brenda) Stevenson, and Traci Stevenson; grandchildren, Eric (Michelle), Amanda (Ethan), Justina, Jesse, Jay, Angela, Andi, Eric, Shannon, Josh, Amy, and Erin; and great-grandchildren, Addisyn, Chase, Cole, Wilson, Ansley, Walter and Aliyah; brother, John Calouette; sisters-in-law, Sharon Calouette and Lenore Palmgren; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Palmgren and Arthur Stevenson; siblings, Robert Calouette, Bonnie Teal, Don Calouette, and Mike Calouette; and three nephews.

Visitation will take place on Friday, March 28, 2025, from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. EST at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. The funeral service will take place at 5 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River with a luncheon to follow.

Burial will be in the Bark River Twp. Cemetery.
