PALM BAY, Fla. — James DeVet, 76, passed away at Hospice House on March 5 in Palm Bay, Florida. Jim will be deeply missed by his wife, Sue, and daughters Tanya Glew (Tony) and Kimberly Antilla (Dave), beloved Grandpa to Rylie, Jonas, Norah and Wyatt Glew, Emma and Brayden Antilla, loving sister Debbie Julian (Mike), sister-in-law Sharyl DeVet, brothers-in-law Steve Franzoi and Randy Franzoi (Jenny), nieces and nephews Amelia, Lillian, Jaelyn, Spencer, Dave, Tammy, Rick, Paul and Christie. He is predeceased by his parents George and Marie (Clash) DeVet, brother Tom and sister-in-law Cheryl Figg.
Jim was born in Chicago on November 25, 1948 and grew up in Iron Mountain spending his time playing sports, acting in school plays, hanging out with friends and working at Penney’s.
Jim and Sue married in 1970, both graduating from NMU in 1972 with degrees in elementary education. In 1971 Jim joined the Army National Guard and retired in 1995.
He began his teaching career in 1972 at Rapid River Schools teaching grades 4-6 over his 33 years, proud of the students he taught and the lasting friendships he made.
During this time he volunteered with Special Olympics in the recreation program for handicapped individuals.
Jim enjoyed fishing, Brewer games, playing his guitar, cooking, attending Tanya and Kimberly’s events and spending time with family and friends.
A celebration of Jim’s life will take place at his special Michigan spots with family.
His Florida family and friends will gather to remember Jim at his home on a later date.
Fountainhead Funeral Home is in charge of his cremation.
