Walter L. ‘Luke’ Fleury

BATTLE CREEK — Walter L. “Luke” Fleury, 62, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away suddenly of natural causes on December 16, 2024. Born on March 1, 1962, in Escanaba, Luke was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend who left a legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom.

Luke was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Donald Fleury, and brothers, Rev. Douglas Fleury, Wayne Leslie Fleury and his sister Noreen Upton. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his devoted wife of 43 years, Barbara Fleury; his proud children, Paul (Bethany) Fleury, Wayne (Lila) Fleury, and Kari (Jason) Hawkins; and his adored 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving mother, Theresa Fleury; his dear siblings, Lynn (Bob) Holmberg, Norman Fleury, Pattie (Bob) White, Donna (Dan) McDonald, Rhonda (Todd) Way, and Alan Rossetter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and countless individuals whose lives he touched.

Luke and Barbara Summers united in holy matrimony on September 12, 1981, and from that day forward, they embarked on a journey of unwavering companionship and mutual support. Luke was the epitome of selflessness, a trait that was evident in every aspect of his life, including his final act as an organ donor. His generous spirit extended not only to his family and friends but also to those in need, even beyond his time on earth.

A man of many talents, Luke retired from a fulfilling career in Industrial maintenance just a few months prior to his passing. His work ethic and dedication were unparalleled.

Luke’s interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid gun collector and an ardent outdoorsman, finding solace and joy in fishing and hunting. His remarkable guitar collection was a testament to his love for music, and he played for his church throughout the majority of his adult life. His faith was the cornerstone of his existence, and he was a faithful member of Downtown Church in Battle Creek, where he shared his musical talents and deep spiritual insights.

Luke’s knowledge of the scriptures was unmatched, showcasing his dedication to lifelong learning and personal growth. His hands were skilled in more ways than one, earning him the reputation of a jack of all trades. His ingenuity and problem-solving abilities were as much a part of his character as his gentle demeanor.

Luke was a family man at heart, fiercely passionate about the well-being of his loved ones, especially his grandchildren, as their “Papa” he loved spending time teaching them the guitar and to draw. His guidance and unwavering support were the foundations upon which his family thrived. Friends knew him to be loyal and trustworthy, someone who could be relied upon in times of need.

Those who knew Luke will remember him as a gentle soul, with a sense of humor that could light up the darkest of rooms. His wisdom was sought after by many, and his advice was always delivered with kindness and empathy.

Funeral services will be held at the Downtown Church of Battle Creek at 135 Hamblin Avenue on Sunday, December 22, at 4 p.m. with Pastor Daniel McDonald, officiating. A time of visitation will be held at the church beginning at 2 p.m.

In accordance with his giving nature, Luke’s final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ donation.

We bid farewell to Walter L. “Luke” Fleury, a man of great virtue and kindness. His journey on earth has ended, but the echoes of his influence will resonate for generations to come.
