Frank James Lundberg

ENSIGN — Frank James Lundberg, 88, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born September 11, 1936 to Margaret Mae (Lunzman) and John Alexander Lundberg. He grew up on the Ensign Township family farm. He had attended the Rapid River School district. Later he attended Michigan State for dairy and butter making related curriculum.

He met his future wife – Alice Mae (Whybrew) Lundberg while exhibiting their 4-H calves at the U.P. State Fair. He loved her red hair and they soon became inseparable. They married September 24, 1955. They had two sons: James and David. They resided in Ensign Township on a parcel of land from the family farm.

Frank taught 4-H for many years, was active in his church, very busy with projects around the church including building the new parish hall, remodeling the parsonage, installing solar for the church, was an avid deer hunter, enjoyed cutting firewood, and hiking on his properties. He started his career at the Rapid River Creamery and pursued training in butter making at Michigan State in Lansing. This eventually led to his U.S.D.A. Department of Agriculture

professional career in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania where he retired at 53. Upon retirement, Frank and Alice returned to their “beloved” U.P. roots. Frank and Alice purchased family property they enjoyed year round with their family and friends creating many memories for others to enjoy in the years to come. In 2002, he cut 40 cords of pulpwood making logging trails for family use. These logging trails remain in use today by family members.

He was very active in the Walter W. Cole American Legion post in Rapid River for 30 plus years. He served as vice commander and enjoyed the brotherhood of comrades along with his wife, Alice as an Auxiliary member.

These relationships remain in effect today with his boys hearing many stories of his professionalism and dedication to the post.

He was extremely proud of this membership and served many times in the Honor Guard for the “fallen” military members.

Frank and Alice believed in the value of education encouraging their sons and grandchildren to obtain college degrees as well as advanced degrees. This was extremely important and he often stated it never hurts to have more tools in the toolbox.

They supported many local school events and activities.

Frank is survived by his two children, James (Fran) Lundberg and David (Cheryl) Lundberg; grandchildren and step-grandchildren, JoAnne (Ryan) Spence, Angela (Chris) Lopac, Amy Lundberg, Benjamin Lundberg, Kelly (Will) Weerts, and Kevin (Amy) Brienen; numerous great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Beyne; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
