Duane ‘Dewey’ P. Marenger
GLADSTONE — Duane “Dewey” P. Marenger, age 83, of Gladstone (Flat Rock), passed away Sunday morning, April 9, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on April 17, 1939 in Escanaba, the son of the late Eugene and Pearl (Sovey) Marenger.
Duane married the former Nancy Stoneclift on September 1, 1962 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Escanaba and she preceded him in death in 2021. Together, the couple shared 58 years of marriage and raised four children, Glenn, Lori, Alan, and Eugene. They worked alongside together with their family on the Marenger family farm while also owning and operating the Flat Rock Grocery Store from 1972 until 1976. Dewey and Nancy purchased a home and wintered in Florida for 25 plus years, enjoying the sunshine and company of both Michigan and Florida friends. Dewey was strong in his faith as a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock and was proud to have never missed weekly Mass in 58 years — whether they were home or traveling the country, he and Nancy always found a church to attend. He enjoyed hunting and playing baseball until he was 76 years old, also coaching baseball for over 20 years.
He is survived by his children, Glenn Marenger of Cornell, Lori (Rich) Kwarciany of Escanaba, Alan (Diane) Marenger of Escanaba, and Eugene (Pam) Marenger of Gladstone; 10 grandchildren, Amanda Kidd, Kyle Marenger, Ethan Marenger, Gavin Kwarciany, Tyler Kwarciany, Justin Marenger, Jordan Marenger, Trent Marenger, Emily Marenger, and Alesha Marenger; seven great-grandchildren, Melia, Vivian, Scarlet, Clayton, Fisher, Bexley, and Laci; and a great-grandson on the way, also many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dewey was preceded in death by his wife.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 21, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Friday at church with Father Sebastian Chacko officiating. A luncheon will follow Mass in the Fr. Matt Hall at church.
Burial will take place in the Escanaba Township Cemetery in Flat Rock later this spring.
