Man pleads no contest to violating bond
ESCANABA — A man who is also facing felony charges in district court pled no contest in circuit court to a bond violation.
Colton Troy Brunette, 23, of Wilson, was virtually in Delta County Circuit Court before Judge John Economopoulos on Tuesday to address a bond violation.
Brunette was out on bond for a previous offense, stolen property – receiving and concealing – $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.
There were several conditions of the bond that Brunette was required to adhere to, including no alcohol, marijuana, or illegal controlled substances.
Brunette was allegedly in violation of this bond condition on Feb. 16 when he and another man were pulled over. Authorities located 197 grams of cocaine, roughly 103 grams of suspected fentanyl, 101 grams of ecstasy, and other illegal substances. The investigation also found a loaded gun and over $13,000 in cash.
In district court, Brunette was arraigned on four charges, including conspiracy to commit controlled substance – delivery/manufacture (cocaine, heroin or another narcotic) 50 to 449 grams; two counts of conspiracy to commit controlled substance – delivery/manufacture (schedules 1, 2, and 3 except marijuana and cocaine); and one count of a controlled substance – delivery/manufacture of methamphetamine.
Attorney Trent Stupak is representing Brunette in circuit court regarding the bond violation and in district court regarding the drug charges.
Brunette, through Stupak, pled no contest to alleged violation.
“We believe that it’s in his best interest to enter a no-contest plea to the alleged bond violation. In return, the prosecuting attorney’s office will agree to leave sentencing in the discretion of the court,” Stupak said.
Brunette is currently logged in the Delta County Jail and has a bond of $75,000 through district court for his alleged offenses on Feb. 16.
Economopoulos revoked the bond on the circuit court case so that he may receive credit for any time served, but if he is able to pay the $75,000 bond out of district court, a $5,000 bond will be reinstated in circuit court.
Brunette will be back in district court for his preliminary examination on April 10.
