Fire destroys homes on Sheridan Road

Brian Rowell Daily Press Fire destroyed at least two homes on Sheridan Road Monday night in Escanaba. A fire was reported about 6:20 p.m. at 915 Sheridan Road. Within 10 minutes flames could be seen shooting from the windows and roof of the structures. Escanaba Public Safety and several volunteer fire departments were fighting the blaze.

ESCANABA — At least two homes were destroyed in a blaze that struck a north Escanaba neighborhood Monday night. Firefighters were trying to save a third home as they tried to bring the fire under control.

Escanaba Public Safety officers were called to 915 Sheridan Road about 6:20 Monday night for a report of a house on fire. At the time of the call it was said that people were trying to get possessions out of the burning house.

Within 10 minutes, flames could be seen throughout the inside of the home and they began to shoot from windows and the roof. The area is comprised of thee homes that are all built very closely together. It appeared that an adjacent home also caught fire. Firefighters were pumping water onto a third home in an attempt to keep the blaze from spreading.

A large column of thick, black smoke was coming from the burning structures and was visible blocks away from the scene of the fire.

In addition to the Escanaba Public Safety Department, several other volunteer fire departments were called to help.

Escanaba Public Safety officers expected to remain on the scene until they were sure hot spots from the fire were extinguished.

Monday night, firefighters were concentrating their efforts to putting out the blaze and had not started the process of trying to determine the cause of the fire.
